Kitchen layout advice

Hello,

I'd love some input on our kitchen layout. After weeks of agonizing we still aren't "feeling" it. Below is the link to what we have so far. The dimensions are 15x20 and the window/sink wall faces north.

Thanks!

Here is a link that might be useful:

What is the aisle width between sink wall and island?

Is that a range or a rangetop/cooktop? In other words, how many ovens do you have--the wall oven only, or the wall oven plus a range?

I don't think you will use that prep sink for cooking. Just put the DW on the left of the sink instead of the right, and you have a great setup. (The point of moving the DW is to make it possible for one person to load/unload while another person is using the sink and the counter between sink and range to prep). I think you would just intuitively use your workspace that way--it feels more natural to just slide from sink to range rather than to have to turn around and carry stuff across the aisle.

However, with the double ovens and the fridge where they are, that might be where you would do your baking, and in that case it would be convenient to have a water source. If you don't think the fridge is enough (I'm assuming your fridge has a water dispenser?), then the prep sink would be helpful. But you probably wouldn't need the butcher block--if you use those ovens for baking bread and pastries, you wouldn't need it. A marble inset in the counter would be more useful for baking. Of course, if you plan on using the wall oven for lasagna/turkey/etc., then you might want regular cooking prep space over there.

I wouldn't switch the sink and DW... I prefer the prep space next to the stove/cooktop. The only thought I had was how much clearance do you have between the frig and island. I like the plan.

Explain why you're not "feeling it."

Overall, it's a pretty good plan, but it could use a few tweaks.

One thing that sticks out to me as odd is the refrigerator placement. The space between the fridge and the corner will seem very cave-like. To avoid this, you could move the refrigerator down next to the ovens, but then you'd lose that little bit of counter space between them. Did you have a particular use in mind for that space, and if so, could it be accomplished on the other side of the fridge or some place else?

I also find the dropped area on the island odd. I would much rather have the island all one height. This just seems to work better, both functionally and aesthetically.

You have only one set of cabinets designated as having glass fronts. With so many uppers, I think more glass fronts would be nice. I'd also like to see the one you do have designated as glass come all the way down to the counter for a hutch look. You have plenty of counter space and that would be a nice variation.

If you do have a sink in the corner of the island, I'd suggest one made for a corner placement with the faucet on the inner corner. That makes it just as useful from either side of the island.

Finally, with two other water sources so close by, I'd lose the pot filler.

depends on what your goal is...you have a lg space-if you are looking for openness, then I'd try for a bigger island, and put sink or cooktop there so your back isn't to people, as it is now.Do you want a little more enclosure and zone creation? Then I'd look at that wall of frig/oven and think of a U shape setup...island would have to be redone or moved in some way.

i'd put the fridge on the top 'wing' of the U. from fridge to sink to clean things... might move the stove down a bit too. have the counter on bottom 'wing' for baking area.

I agree with desertsteph. The fridge is not in a good location on your plan. Generally food moves from fridge to sink to cooktop or oven to table. Will you *use* a prep sink, or will you use the main sink? (My DH believes the prep sink exists for him to wash his hands before dinner -- putting him right in my way as I am in and out of the fridge.) I use my large double sink to prep.

I like my cooktop near the oven/microwave. Easy assembly of plates before serving.
