Cut underground wire!!

Today the plumbers cut the cable feeding my workshop ( 2/0 al. ) I was not home when it happened and they are now saying that they were not told about it so they are not responsible. Although I did tell them it was a couple months ago and I guess its to much to expect them to remember that long!! Anyway until I can afford to replace 200' of 4 runs of it can it be temporarily spliced for a month or so? I need power in my shop ASAP to finish up some work. Thanks for any help.

Yes, an electrical supply house should sell splicing kits. I've never used them, but I know of other pro's on here that have.

Yes, there ARE direct burial splice kits.
NO, it is NOT your responsibility! It is THEIRS!
You do NOT dig that deep unless you get the area surveyed first. It is a free service and ANYONE digging should call first. See the link below.
This is all contingent on whether the cable was deep enough to begin with. If it was only 12" down you're out of luck.

Here is a link that might be useful: Call before you dig!

When the one-call locator service traces the utility power, can they be relied on to mark a line to an outbuilding subpanel? They have no way to know it is there and needs to be looked for, if they don't happen to notice it among the other lines coming to the house. You could get lucky and it may be noticed, but how certain?

Had our lines located with MissDig in SW Mich last year and questioned one of the persons on what they mark, "only utility hookups" was the reply. Any additional work such as outbuilding water and electrical are not covered, Sprinkling systems are not covered.

Should have marked it with paint, it lasts quite a while even through mowings. See peteys advice about repair, not replace.

The cable was in conduit and buried at least 18" because it was inspected and that was what the inspector said it needed to be. The plumbers cut through the pvc conduit and all four wires.. I have been arguing with them all day and I don't have time to deal with them right now. Going to call electricians tomorrow and at least it can be spliced.. Is the splice good enough for permanent or is it just temp? Thanks for the replys,,,, Matt

Out here in Arizona it's called Blue Stake, but like the others said, they only mark utilities belonging to the companies like power, phone etc. You must call a private outfit to have your own stuff located. We take responsibility for what we hit while trenching, the liability is priced into the job. Sometimes the customer decides to save money and dig it themselves, which we are glad to let them do.

hey petey when do I get out of this stinkin cell, this dial up is killin me.

If I hadn't I wouldn't have brought it up again
