Shower Rewiring

I'm getting ready to renovate our shower, and since the fan on the old heater keeps going out I was thinking of just replacing it with a baseboard heater along the back (right-hand side in the picture) and be done with it. I was just wondering if anybody had any suggestions for a unit that won't stick out too far (it should be out of the way enough to keep from tripping over).

Second, the electric-razor receptacle and fan/light switches get gunked up from time to time. Are there ones, maybe with some kind of cover, that would help keep the soap and shampoo out?

Finally, we get shocks sometimes from the shower light that hangs down from the ceiling (I think they called it a pendant light?), so I want to replace that as well. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Tell me that is INSIDE the shower?
    The heater, receptacle and switches?
Tell me you have a pendant light INSIDE the shower?
Tell me you are getting shock from this light?

    O - M - G !!!

Is this in the US ?

PLEASE get a professional in there to rewire that WHOLE room to code before someone DIES!!!!

OK, now you can fess up and tell us this was all a joke, right?

No way can this be real. Hang on while I pick my jaw up off the floor.

If this is real, you've got major MAJOR issues going on. I've seen some pretty messed up jerry rigged stuff, but all I can say is HOLY S**T!!!!!

I really hope that the picture you posted is deceptive.
Is that heater inside the shower?
Are the switches and receptacles inside the shower?
If they are, you are leading a charmed life based on the fact that you and your family are not dead yet.
That electrical equipment must be removed from inside the shower enclosure.

I hope you are going to tell us this is a photoshopped picture!
If not-it is amazing that you or your family are still around to tell about it!
How in the h*** did this ever pass an inspection?
Cut the power to these switches/lights/heater NOW!

The life you save may be your own!

Yup, I see it now. PHOTOSHOP!

Nice job and nice try though.

How can you possibly get in that thing... it is SO DIRTY!

Cluck-cluck. All they do is cluck-cluck.

Fuggedaboudit. The sparkies here are like that--you take something that's mostly working for you and they run around like Chicken Little, citing codes and chanting incantations.

You can solve most of your problems cheaply and efficiently by putting a 2000 watt heat lamp bulb in that pendant lamp or yours. That way, you can get rid of that old heater altogether. Better yet, use a two-socket adapter and add an ultraviolet bulb so you can get a good tan while you shower. Use that dimmer switch to regulate the temperature and tanning effect.

Don't skimp out on this--use the kind of heat bulb that's designed for brooder sheds or indoor marijuana growing. Just ground the thing to a water pipe and those shocks you've been getting oughta go away. Make sure the wiring is at least 18 guage.

As for the gorp in the receptacle, my advice is to stop using shaving cream with an electric razor and make your wife wash her hair in the basin. You'll save money that way.

PLEASE NOTE that code requires that it MUST BE a GFCI receptacle unless you can prove it was used by your grandfather.

Our tub and shower had the light switch for the bathroom on the far end, away from the shower head. It very seldom got wet. When the area was tiled they did a very neat job cutting out for the box which was never raised to the new level. Just used longer screws on the switch.

Great job on the photo "enhancement".

terribletom: that is absolutely brilliant!! Only thing is, I may have to put a few wraps of electrical tape around the pendant wires for strength... they have gotten a bit frayed over the years.

Now, to the rest of yous: If all you're going to do is criticize, and don't have anything constructive to say... well, I'll refrain from telling you what I told the half-dozen or so pushy electricians that I'd solicited bids from... that drove me to seek out what I had thought was a group of sparkies that first and foremost would strive to be helpful and professional. I am disappointed.

    >OK, now you can fess up and tell us this was all a joke, right?

Ya, I guess so. I had originally planned on saving this for next April 1... but then I kinda figured that that would've be the giveaway. Little did I know...

    >Yup, I see it now. PHOTOSHOP!

Leave it to petey to download the jpeg and look at the header in a hex editor. Dang, shoulda covered my tracks better. :D

Oh well, hope you all got a kick out of my "Shower Nightmare." Thanks for playing, everybody!

Doggone it, first of April is nearly gone and I'd forgotten to revive this until now. Oh well, here it is for those of you who didn't catch it the first time around.... ;-)
