Perhaps pull some of the dark brown from the island, using small glass tiles, faux stone or run the granite up the walls.

One of my very favorite things to do is to take a simple high gloss white tile, and apply it in a complex pattern. You could also go to a mosaic glass, but your countertop has a busy pattern on it, so I don't care for more busy in the backsplash.

Here's an inspiration kitchen with similar granite and a wheat color palette. The backsplash is identified as crema marfil honed mini subway tile. Beautiful!

I love this look of piano key tile with glass. It's classy and adds dimension without it being too wild. Its not a look that will go out of style and date your home anytime soon. Beautiful Kitchen!

I'm at the same stage and have chosen 8 x 20 inch warm gray tiles and a focal point behind the oven done in a tile that looks like separate 1/2" tiles in warm grey, off white various shades of grey and taupe, some are glazed and look like pieces of stainless steel. I like the larger tiles - less grout line and so less busy with my granite. I have under counter lighting so that will perk up the khaki grey colour. My kitchen is at the end of a long room that has my dining room table and great room stretching away from it. I found some nice white with bits of blurred grey and brown in it in the same 8 x 20 ish tiles with a high glaze which would hae looked great too (I see you have white cupboards- mine are natural cherry). Since the kitchen is so much part of the main living area, I chose something darker, less kitchen utility than the white. I would have gone with the white i and a harring bone behind the stove if my kitchen were tucked away more. My tile guy said to stay away from stainless tiles - show wipe marks or possibility of rusting in the future if the finish gets nicked? But I like the stainless look too.
I move in to the new home in a week! counter going on today. Keep me in your thoughts.....:)

If you're really wanting to add a pop of color with your tile backsplash, I see two different, and equally beautiful ways you could go. One, a dark red or deep purple. Two, a pale aqua or light blue. Either direction, warm or cool, would look gorgeous with your current surfaces and colors. Below are some tiles from our site for inspiration.
