paint color

Okay, I have been reading all your posts for weeks now and you all have inspired me to finally paint a room in our new house. Yesterday I went out and bought paint and painted 1 wall in the kitchen. I hate it. I actually like it in the daylight somewhat, but at night I can't stand it - it looks like army green.

I have a huge problem when it comes to decorating. Nothing speaks to me. For example, for curtains, I have to go buy some, come home and put them up, realize I do not like them, and then return them and buy more. I repeat this process until I actually like something. I am frustrated because I cannot visualize what something will look like ahead of time. And so it goes for painting as well.

Please help me with a paint color! This one is SW Fervent Brass. I thought I wanted a green and at the last minute went a tad golder because of the gold in the chairs and curtains. Now I am thinking maybe a more copper color.

I will post pictures in a moment - I have to figure out how, as this is my first time ever posting a message.

Ooooooh! I think that's a luscious green! I can see why you might not like it at night, though. My dining room is painted in Laura Ashley Olive #6, a very dark avocado-like shade, and when there's no natural light coming into the windows, it does look somewhat muddy. Are you dead-set against keeping the color? I wonder if bringing extra ambient lighting into the room would help any?

I think you just might have a natural decorating sense but lack the confidence to run with it.

The pics look great but maybe IRL the color is too drab for you. I really like the idea of a bold color in that room and not something to just blend in. A copper wouldn't really do much for your floors.

You could try BM Anjou Pear which would hold up day or night.

Okay auntjen, now I'll really show my decorating stupidity! How would I "bring in ambient lighting"? Perhaps with lamps? I was originally going for an olive but switched one card over at the last minute. Also, I did that color thing where you upload a picture. I uploaded the curtain and then the chair and it recommended an olive but it did not have an exact one from SW. I have the cards from SW so I was choosing from them (I might have limited myself because of that.)

Parma, what is it in the Anjou Pear that would be different? Is it because it would be a little lighter or a little golder? I will have to go to BM and check it out!

I cannot thank you guys enough for your time! I really enjoy this decorating thing. I just have a really hard time with it.

Pam, you aren't decor-stupid at all! Don't be so hard on yourself! The fabrics you've chosen are gorgeous, and I think you're definitely on the right track. I think many, if not most, of us approach decorating as kind of a "trial and error" type thing. Some things that we think will work don't. Some things that we aren't sure about end up being exactly what our space needs. It's definitely a process, and while it can be frustrating, it's also a way to learn and grow in a better understanding of what truly pleases our eyes.

And yes, I was wondering if introducing a couple of lamps into the room might help liven up the color somewhat at night. The darker, more intense shades can be a bit tricky -- they glow like jewels during the day, but at night little pools of light from lamps can sometimes really help.

Ben Moore Anjou Pear is from their new line of Aura paint. It's a really kicky color and can be kind of bright compared to an olive.

It would be a statement color instead of a perfect match, although that gold stripe in your drapes seems to have a lot of green in it.

Trying to see true colors on a monitor is not an exact science, by any means. I do like the depth of color you chose.

In my opinion, the green doesn't work. Your chairs have a wonderful print and color, and you can't change them with the seasons as easily as the window treatments. There is a wonderful paint color called "silver sage" sold by Restoration Hardware" which is in most malls. I see bits of sage in both your chairs and draperies. It is a great color day and night. Most dining rooms are used in the evening and you need something that will look great by candlelight.

i think picking paint colors is the hardest thing so now I always buy quarts of different colors and paint large swatches on all the walls to see in the daylight and nightlight...it has saved me lots of work and money. I agree with mbarstow that the green doesnt go with the chairs or drapes. I would pick one of the colors from the chairs or the drapes. I like the color of the lions in the chair uphostery or the soft green in the chair or the taupe-ish color in the drapes.

Pam I happen to love the green and I should. I just had my bathroom painted Olive Tree by Ralph Lauren. And my green and your green could be twins.

At first glance I thought I should start singing "Sock it to me" as in Goldie Hawn from Laugh In.

But it is only paint and can be changed almost as easy as hair color.

Why not live with your color and then go to a Silver Sage or something similiar if you decide you don't or can't live with it.

I think you have a lot of style and guts girl.

I will post my bathroom when the plumbers hook the tub and sink back up.

On second thought I don't know if I like the green with your room. I was being bias because of the green we both picked.

I haven't any suggestions I just know what I like when I see it. But every one and their brother uses Silver sage I swear.

I'm going through a heck of a time picking paint as well. Please don't be offended when I say....just my initial reaction...I don't like that color at all in that room...sorry It's too somber and old looking. You have beautiful windows and floors but they just don't stand out because the paint color is overwhelming.
A dark warm yellow/beigy if you like that...maybe?
If you like green though, a softer green towards the sage family as newdawn mentioned.

My eye went right to the copper terracota tones in the curtains and chair fabric. Beautiful by the way. I am thinking BM Audubon Russet, BM Copper Mountain or SW Sedona Clay.

I am really bad with paint color as well. I do not have an eye for color.

Also, I have a relatively open floor plan, so I wanted to make sure the choice I made in one room, didn't clash with my other rooms .. at least on the first floor...

so rather than spend money on quarts . I spent money on a color consultation.. with a designer/painter gal in my neighborhood... It was YEARS ago, and she gave me 3 options for all the first floor rooms in my house. Maybe there is someone you can pay to help you pick the colors...

When you add up the cost of 2 or 3 quarts, you might be there!!

I love your bathroom newdawn! The color looks identical to mine for sure. I took parma's suggestion and bought some Anjou pear. I have been sick so I haven't tried any yet but I think I will like it much better. Do you like your color as much in the night hours? I actually like my color in the daylight but it turns much murkier and army-like at night. I need to paint my whole kitchen which blends into the laundry room hallway and the butler's pantry so I really need to love the color I decide upon and the green I picked just isn't cutting it. I'll post pics of the Anjou Pear when I get some of it on the walls.

Well I finally found a color I'm happy with - 3 times is a charm. It's hard to tell the real color in these pictures because sometimes it is greenish, sometimes goldish, sometimes brownish.

Now I have another question though. Where do I stop painting? Do you think the wall behind the stairs should be painted? Also the end of the wall beside the butler's pantry? I can't paint the wall the clock is on because it keeps on going all the way around to the foyer. At least I don't think I can- unless I just stop at one of the bends in the wall. But I am wondering about that little end strip as well as the 'triangle' behind the railing. I tried to take the pictures so you could determine the layout of the room. Please ignore the filth as we have been painting for 3 days and the room really needs a good cleaning!

Dang, now that is beautiful! I love the new color!

That one white wall needs to be warmed up to a beige, cream, pale gold or something like the palest color on the same paint strip as the new wall color.

Good idea power (and dummy me never even thought of that!) But... where would I stop? The wall behind the couch, the wall with the big (ugly) vent in the top is that exact wall. See how it keeps going and going?

You know, we are having 5 different Christmas parties this year and DH just came home with 2 broken fingers. I know I should be sympathetic but I'm having a really hard time at the moment.

As I have been reading y'all's posts for the last month I finally realized what DH meant. Then I thought how funny that everyone was calling their husbands the same exact thing I call mine but then I realized when I call him DH it stands for something completely different ;) That's what decades of marriage does to ya!

P.S. Please ignore the small rug in the family room - I know it's a huge decorating faux paux. DH just put it there to cover up a hole in the berber thanks to our 1 y.o. boxer pup (75-lb 1 y.o. boxer pup!)

I'm not sure about where the painting should stop, but just wanted to say that this new shade is absolutely divine! You picked a winner! :-)

The new color is perfect! What is it?

Your new color looks beautiful! Your furniture is very very nice - those barstools are beautiful as are your parsons chairs.

I can't really *get* the lay out of the house but, and you are not going to like this, the creamy white walls need a little more punch of color. A neutral but with some depth. You have 2 strong colors - the green & the red - which are both great but you need something with some depth to tie it all together.

I am seeing in both your upholstery pieces that a goldish color is in both - I would go with a color like that for your foyer & staircase. The color needs to compliment the fireplace & the tile in your entry.

    Great job!!

    Smiles:)

It looks great! My only suggestion is to paint the air return grates on the wall. You've gone to all the trouble to put togther a beautiful room, but my eye goes directly to the white rectangle. Just brush the paint on, 2 coats. Another tip is to paint the one small strip that is on the wall you don't know what to paint. Think of it as a continuation of the wall in the same room as the green. It should be green as well.

Thank you guys! The color is BM pirates chest. I keep telling my kids if you look closely you'll see hairs growing out of it! Actually, BM changed the color name but I'm not sure what the new name is. I will paint the grate(s) - I was thinking about that anyway. As far as the white walls, I don't think I can get them all painted by the first (or even second or third) party because they go all the way around and way up (20 feet or so) in the foyer. That will have to be an 'after the hectic season' project. Especially with DH and his broken fingers. Everyone knows our house is a work in progress. At least I have some paint on the walls!
