There aren't any rules about blending wood species. What color stain is on your cherry cabinets? Walnut floors and cherry cabinets could work fine, it's all a matter of the stain color on your cabinets. Do you have a photo?

Sorry, I was talking about stains, not wood species. I am thinking of maple cabinets with a cherry stain...a cherry stained floor might be too much or look bad if it doesn't match exact, right?

If you can't match something exactly, it's better to go in the opposite direction all together.

Have you considered a limestone or light tile?

I am actually partial to tile in the kitchen, however the home has wood flooring throughout which will be refinished so we'll need to choose cabinets accordingly. I agree with Paul about another direction but I've also always loved cherry cabinets, now if I do a medium stain flooring, may need to look into a French country white cabinet...decisions!
