Help select dining chairs with this table

I was going to use a table like the one below (mine is in storage) as a desk.. but I am starting to think it will make a good dining table until I remodel the kitchen (1-1.5 yr)at which point, I'll either build in bench seating or I'll modify the space so that I can accommodate the Matthew Hilton extension table I've fallen in love with.

If I use this, I'll need dining room chairs.. what kind of chairs would you recommend for the style?

Some factors to consider:

- The table is glass on a steel base- it's not wood.

- This will go in an eat-in kitchen so it won't be formal.

- I am on a tight budget but I am not willing to compromise on sturdiness or quality. I'd rather watch CL/ebay for 3 months than settle for something that won't stand up to use.

- I'd prefer wood with either a woven natural material or upholstery because the table will be surrounded by windows on two sides.. between that and the glass top, I think I will want to "warm up" the dining space a bit.

- I'd love something that leans retro-- but it's not a requirement.

I love the Hans Wagner wishbone chair-- and I think it would work well.. but it is out of budget unless I get a knockoff. I also like the idea of either a retro spindle chair or a much more traditional windsor (in black- or *maybe* painted. I could so see chairs painted in BM Wasabi in this space).

Or.. do you think I should just keep this as my desk and keep watching CL for a warmer more inviting table?

Oh gosh. Hard choice, but I do think it would make a stunning desk. I am not a big fan of glass-topped dining tables. I do love the way they look, but I remember trying to keep the one my mother had in her kitchen clean. Also, I remember one time my dad was sitting there and put his elbow down on the table and the top cracked. He must have just hit the sweet spot-and he hadn't even put it down hard at all. Of course, my parents were then able to replace the clear glass with textured glass that didn't show every fingerprint or smudge. Also reminded all of us to keep our elbows off the table! ;)

I like the table but recommend you keep watching Craigslist for both a sturdy but inexpensive table and chairs as you suggested because it doesn't sound as if you love the table for the DR and need chairs as well. Likely easier to find a 'set' and there usually seem to be many available. However, if you do find the perfect chairs without the table you could then use them with this table for now.

Woven contemporary style chairs will look good with that table.

For chairs, I think you can go in almost any direction style-wise with this table. The question will be what scale will look good and I am not talented enough to tell that from a picture.

When you are looking for 'something" at auction or Craig's list or a thrift shop....you need to keep an open mind and keep looking. Likely some style you hadn't even considered will strike you out of the blue....and be just perfect...if you haven't predetermined what it is you are looking for.

Yeah, I hadn't really thought of this as a dining table when I bought it a few years ago--but I could imagine having some fun styling it with chargers, centerpieces, etc.

I am still looking for alternatives but most that I see are too big... or too oaky. Oak is big here.

It does take me in a completely new direction which is exciting--but only if I like that direction when I get there lol. No harm in trying, right?

The table was originally paired with a leatherette parsons chair.. that's not a look I'll go for. I'd really like a vintage swedish spindle chair like the one below.. or a windsor chair. Do you think they will be lost next to the weight of the steel legs of the table?
