Have you considered a plantation shutter?

Shutters are beautiful, but can be expensive. Depends on your budget.

I personally don't like venetians. Just my personal taste. I love panels on large rings that can open in the day and close at night. To keep it contemporary, make sure there is no 'fruu-fruu' on them, pick out contemporary fabric, and pick a contemporary styled rod and rings for the top.
