BHG kitchen plan - thanks to helpers

First of all, a thank you to rhome and everyone else who responded to helping me with BHG. It really is the greatest. So, here is my proposed kitchen plan (new construction, so the whole house will be posted on the Building forum.)

My wishlist is:

Eating nook for 4 that can expand to 6 if needed.

DH wants an island.

Function - I think I do most work in a Ref to sink to cook pattern.

Open to family room (in this plan, there is a half wall behind part of the bench so I can see into the family room while seated at the nook.

I wanted two ovens and a smooth cooktop. I couldn't find space for 2 wall ovens, so I put in the 40" Fridgedaire that has a tiny 10" auxillary oven, and I do think that will be sufficent.

I know the pantry is small, but my experience has been that I just lose track of things in a larger one.

Any advice is appreciated. And the entire plan is up for review, since it's new construction. Thank you!

I think the general layout looks pretty good. It is a little hard to see your dimensions. Also where is the oven? Is the dining room open to the family room? The door from the kitchen seems a bit constricting if you want your guests to enter that way.

I'd be concerned that if something happened to the 40" range you might not be able to find something to fit the spot...either too small or too big?

How many in your family? How many possible workers in your kitchen?

Thanks, rhome. That thought did cross my mind, but I wasn't able to figure out a way to get a cooktop and two ovens in my plan. There are four in our family and we have two cooks about 25-40% of the time. Also, the kids are small, so we do a lot of baking and projects together. If you have any suggestions... in my very first, original plan, I had no nook and so the range wall had a cooktop flanked by ovens. It was a great setup, but I loooove the nook, so...

    Let me try to repost with a better size..{{!gwi}}

Also - if we added a foot to the plan, making the dimensions 16'6" by 15', then would I have room for two ovens? Would you separate them or keep on all one wall?

Jenn-air and several other manufacturers make a 30" range with double ovens. Would these work for you instead?.

I might think about swapping sink and range...your island is going to be a barrier between the range and fridge, and if you swap them, the sink will be closer to the nook for clean up. (Not sure if you eat in your DR all the time or mostly in the nook?) Having the range on the main wall will keep the cooking area between there and the fridge...maybe consider a prep sink somewhere?

I like the Jenn air but really fell in love with the spread out cooktop on the 40 inch range. Opinions - if I were going to do a cooktop and two ovens instead, where would you put the ovens? One under the cooktop and one under the island? Stacked together somewhere?
In terms of a prep sink, where would that go? SO it does seem like a barrier island? I wondered about that.

I really like your plan. I have a Maytag Gemini range with the double ovens just like the Jenn-air that Linley1 posted. I LOVE it! Lets me have 2 ovens in just 30" of space. It's certainly not a "fancy" oven compared to most, but it's really usable.
My finished kitchen has a U layout similar and smaller than your proposed one. I'm really enjoying cooking in it. It's working out so well. Everything seems to be where it should be!
Good luck with your kitchen. I can't wait to see your progress.

I'm definitely not one of the layout gurus on this board, but if you put the cooktop where the sink is now, you could put one oven underneath, and then you can maybe stack the MW/second oven near the fridge? Maybe have that run be (from left to right): MW/oven, fridge, pantry? Not sure if that would be too much tall cabinetry there, but you could always put the second oven to the left or right of the cooktop...

Prep sink in island would be great, just not sure how big the island is now?

The island is 54" by 33" right now. DH would like a wider island, and I agree visually that might be good, so that's why we are taking about adding a foot to the kitchen (we are actually considering adding a few feet to several areas in the house... The walk ways are 39". I originally wanted 42" but then the island looked kind of small and lost. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to be tinkering with this and then reposting.
BY the way - if things are in this U (even if I swap cooktops), does anyone think it seems too spread out? I am a very messy cook, so space is good, but I am just above the limits of the 'work triangle' as it is.

We are looking at the new GE oven(s). It is a 30' space and has the 2 oven cavities.
They claim it will be available Oct. 1st, so I don't know how true that will be and much more about it.
It sounds like a dream set-up if it all works as they advertise.

Here is a link that might be useful: double ovens in the space of one

Thank you! The GE looks like an excellent option. I wish I could see more about it - but it says Oct 2008, so I'll just keep an eye out. I'll play with my plan and I'll be back...

What I see here is a spread out kitchen best for one cook. Have you done any reading on kitchen zones? They really work better for a kitchen with multiple workers, for family baking projects, etc. The kids will get older and want to work along side or do their own projects while you work and you don't want to be running into each other and criss-crossing each other's paths.

This is just a quick idea for starters, but if you put the sink, dishwasher, and dish storage on one end, had the cooktop/range on the back wall, a prep sink in the island, and dbl oven by the fridge (or stack with microwave and oven), you would be setting up zones where you could have people dealing with dishes, baking, and cooking all at once without much interference. (There have been some great plans here lately with windows to each side of the range or cooktop)

What is the square across the doorway from the pantry?

The square is a tall cabinet I plan to divide into a broom/cleaning closet on one side and paper and supply storage (art and school papers... a basket for each child, etc) on the other side.
So, rhome - would you leave the fridge where it is?

I don't know whether you want the fridge or the cleanup zone next to the nook. There are plusses either way. Since you seem to be a sink-under-a-window person, I'm betting you want the cleanup area down there.

That means the fridge and oven(s) stay on the wall where the fridge is now, but I like more than one foot between a tall item and a corner cabinet so the counter corner doesn't become a deep cave. That would mean, if the kitchen stays the same size, eliminating the pantry and sliding the fridge over into its spot in order to put an oven stack next to the fridge and still have space before the corner.

The other option would be to create a whole tall wall on that end, without counter, then you could leave the pantry.

OK...A picture's worth a thousand words, so here's something like what I was thinking about. I don't know what materials and colors you want, so it may be all wrong that way, but I just made a stab at it.

Wow, rhome - thanks! Let me give this some thought... I was very locked in to the appliances in their current spots. I will play around with it - and I'll be back.
