My first post/backsplash

Hi everyone,

I am working on a kitchen redo. Nothing structural just color changes.

So far...

1. painted cabinets BM 'sugar cookie'
2. changed floors from tile to engineered hardwood - they now flow with the rest of the condo.

I like both of those changes very much. I now need to pick a backsplash. My original thought was a beadboard one, however, I am worry about it staying clean. I think I need something ceramic or glass. I also want beadboard around my bar area, seen from the dining room but surrounding the kitchen. Dining/Living room area is a sort of robin's egg/north carolina tarheels blue. So my questions to you guys are:

1. Is beadboard ok for the kitchen? Do they make an easy to clean ceramic one?
2. Should I stick with maybe a blue subway that flows with the other rooms? Or stick with a white/cream?
3. Where does the beadboard end and the backsplash begin?

There is ceramic beadboard available -I looked at it as a possibility for my kitchen.
Nice job on updating your kitchen - I think the BB would look great - but it still does have grooves.

Thanks for the compliment. Do you have any idea if the beadboard is a specific brand? Or should I just go to my local tile store and tell them that's what I want?

Take photos of your kitchen to the local tile store. Our local stores had great ideas.

I love the Sugar Cookie color - don't think I've seen it before. The floor is a great contrast with the cabinets and just grounds the room.

I'm a little confused on the beadboard question. I think more photos which show how the kitchen relates to the adjacent areas, particularly one that shows the bar area, would be helpful. Are you saying you're thinking the beadboard might be blue? In any case, you might do some looking on line for the ceramic beadboard a2gemini mentions. I don't recall seeing it in any of the tile places we went, in other words, it's not something that will be widely carried.

As far as the backsplash, I think a color would be a better choice than a white or cream, but what depends a lot on what else is around the kitchen. I'm guessing you have blue walls or blue-feeling rooms, so maybe a blue glass would be a good choice. Hard to say without some pictures taken from farther away.

I love to see something fun and colorful in a tiny kitchen. It's very white, so why not give it some punch! You could use blue or blue and another color. Do you have a color that you are using as an accent in your blue rooms?

I had painted bead board in my last kitchen. It cleans up fine. Just don't use it behind the stove. I love the look and the fact that you can paint it any color you want. Give it some punch like may_flowers says....but if you change your mind, no big deal; another can of paint and you've got a whole different look.

You already have a four inch backsplash. I would experiment with painting first. I am not sure what color your color your counter is.
I would try the same green as the tile you like.
I am not a fan of a backsplash over the four inch backsplash, but this is just a matter of taste.

    This is the ceramic beadboard.

I love your cabinet color! And, the floor is lovely! I think you should try a color on your BS. You can always repaint, or tile over paint.

will post a bar area pic soon. the one i have is super dark. the 4" part where the counter goes up the backsplash will be removed.

I have stained beadboard on my current back splash and I like it very much...except: the crumbs gather in the little grooves where it meets the counter top. If I was to do it over, I'd have put a vertical something (board, tile) at the b/s - wall juncture, then started the bb. It wouldn't need to be very high, may an inch or two... just a flat surface to be able to wipe the dang crumbs away easily instead of having to get the vacuum cleaner out! Which I don't. And so I have crumbs.

I do like that paint color, too! Sugar cookie, huh? Would you say it tends towards a yellow, brown or grey-ish undertone?

another angle with the bar area/blue. i would put beadboard around the bar area in 'white' the same color as the trim on the bottom. rest of the living/dining area is the same blue but one lighter on the color wheel. so i think blue backsplash with beadboard around the bar would work?

deedles...i would guess yellow? if i had to pick one of the 3. originally i was going to go all yellow but i was talked down. I picked sugar cookie because I love to bake :)
