We suggested that to the owner but she is prefers something with a mix of fabrics. At present we are thinking two loveseats in a neutral fabric with botanical print pillows accents and two chairs with in cerulean blue.

I'd do a mix of browns, tans, black and ivory and let the rug be the primary color in the room. Maybe a couple of red and orange accents, but the blue and red in that rug are AWFUL together so I wouldn't bring out cerulean blue at all.

Paint the walls, fire surround, door and window frames all the same off white. Have curtains in the same colour- either fine curtains or thicker, draped curtains. Use curtain rods. It looks like the room has a cathedral ceiling which lends itself to a pendant light with a long chain. A lantern style light in a dark aged brass (same as curtain rods) and clear glass would suit. A cream leather couch (easy to clean) with that red cushion that is in the picture. Cover the arm chair in a dull red with tiny cream/gold dots or flowers on it (also kid and pet friendly). A plain or textured lumber cushion in cream with old-gold piping on the arm chair. A plant that dangles down on the left end of the mantel piece and take off the things that are in the middle. The clock is rather nice. A mirror with an aged brass frame would look good above the mantel piece to tone with the other brassy collectables that they have. Would it be feasible to stain the floor darker? The yellowy tone of the present floor does not compliment the rug. The corner cabinet does not fit there. A coffee table that is made from a brass Eastern tray put next to the chairs instead of in the middle of the carpet. Say good-bye to the walking stick holder. Don't have shiny brass other than the coffee table and some of the ornaments or it look 'bling'. Keeping the background neutral will make the room less busy and the Persian carpet will definitely be the centre point.

I would first clear all of the doo-das. Paint the walls a yellow cream (more neutral, less pastel). Cream colored couch. Heavy weighted curtain panels to pick up red from carpet, pull in a little cream with a floral pattern or trim. Remove curio cabinet. Mov

Sorry... Move painting over fire place elsewhere in room. Put a mirror over fireplace..maybe a little less formal, brown and rustic, or maybe not..

This room is so pretty and cheery I personally would hate to change it. Furthermore, it seems these people have rather formal furniture. However, I would suggest they keep the walls the light yellow and opt for upholstered pieces in the darkest color in the rug -- is it black or navy??? Then, I would suggest throw pillows and furniture throws in the blue and red found in the rug as accents.

I have a living room carpet very much like that in those colors. Transitional/comfortable style can be achieved with less formal furniture and less wall color. I would keep the white trim but paint the walls in a creamy white to pale golden cream to contrast with the white trim. Pick a color for the biggest upholstered piece from the rug colors...I would do a blue, a muted red or a cream. My walls are Dunn-Edwards Cameo, which is a creamy gold color, the living room sofas (two) are a pale beigy cream. The chairs are a soft blue and cream 1 1/2 inch check. The floor is medium oak, and the wood pieces are a pecan color. The large fireplace is in fact a double brick wall with sitting-height hearths on both sides dividing the living room from the den. I have a glass coffee table so the rug is visible. It is casual, transitional and com- fortable. The main difference with your client's room is the relaxed shape of the upholstered pieces in mine and the more traditional shapes in hers.
