@oldhouseguy I figured out what saturated colours are and I'm in love! U wouldn't paint a whole room in one would U?? As U can see in the pic the living room and dining room connect as well as the foyer I'll attach a pic so what kind of colours would U suggest to brighten it up im up for suggestions!

I light light stairways, easier to see. I like papirka walls,cozy. Do all walls. Choose a light one & medium. Then tape to wall & look at it different times of day.

Be very careful that you saturated color is not too close to the wood tones. I'd go with blues from BM's Williamsburg Collection.

Were def not painting the wood we hav decided if anything we may decide to just paint the windowsills upstairs in the bedrooms and bathroom but leave the rest of house Un painted I can't seem to find that rug that Hayley suggested anywhere online ??? What col saturated wall woukd u use with tht rug?? And only 1 wall??? Also another dilemma .... This is the kitchen and there is a butlers pantry off of it . we don't really hav the money to do anything but paint in both rooms what would u suggest???

I too am interested if you have made any decisions. Personally I think if you want it light, bright, and not oriental, that you should gravitate towards the Elmira White paint. All the woodwork is going to suck light out of the rooms anyway and then you can go with bright pops of oranges, maroons, blues, and golds on your furniture, and art work. Love that striped rug...very kid friendly looking.

I like the idea of a saturated wall in a blue but would that go with the sofa? or should I use different colour ? As for the rug I can't seem to find it on ikea site at all or on Amazon ? My other question was if I did one one in saturation wat do I do on other walls? And then how do I make it flow into the dining room ? Any suggestions on the kitchen and butlers pantry pics I posted ??

Your home is worthy of an all over color plan with a color consultant. Wall colors are tricky from selecting the "right" colors to placement to interior lighting. With so much exposed wood work the particular paint colors are crucial. We can do this online with a house plan and a fan deck from Benjamin Moore! Just a thought - Look at the wood - it is composed a many colors. From what I can see there is a yellow or golden undertone. When choosing a color you will have a huge success if the color also has that undertone in it. I don't mean the color has to be yellow for many colors have that undertone. You can have a beige with more yellow and one with more pink.

Ok very interesting im not a huge fab of yellows but if I can find something else with an undertone I'll go for that! I don't really want the whole downstairs to be the same colour that's my Prob

GORGEOUS HOME!. I imagine that after buying that beauty your funds are indeed low. You cannot go wrong with classic craftsman colors with a modern twist.

a soft sage green is historical, but a blue-green-grey such as a robin's egg. BM Ocean air is fresh and looks great with wood.

Keep your furnishings light if you can--legs on furniture, bright rugs, light curtains at the windows, excellent lighting, fabrics, etc. Think of the wood trim as a frame of on a beautiful colorful painting.

Shop around, Amazon is not always best price. Search Mohawk rainbow rug. It is also listed as Townhouse Carnival rug. I have it in my living room and absolutely love the colors, but it's a bit thin/flat. A rug pad fixed that.

it is not a color. it a kind of paint. a bit more expensive but it washes beautifully and you can retouch years later and it looks the same. It is a great paint. also it does not smells much.

I would keep most rooms the same, but since you have lots of mounldings if you really feel like color in one room, go for it.

Pantry & kitchen I would stay with a shade of white, since are already painted. But only the painted areas, still don't paint any wood. Buy sample cans of off-whites. There are so many whites. Paint on poster board & tape up to see at different times of day. Suggestion for your hardware & hinges in kitchen: go to a salvage yard or thrift store to look for hammered copper. That would be appropriate for arts & crafts homes. You may need to collect for some time to find all that you need , however it would be worth the time & energy. Also it looks as though you already have the original hardware in the butler's pantry. Don't change it. Use it for an example of what to look for in the kitchen. Don't change what is in the kitchen until you have the proper replacements.

Before doing any painting, look at updating your lighting in each room. Check Ikea for LED bulbs. They will last much longer & stay cooler than other lighting. Are very economical to run. More reasonable initial cost to buy now that they are more popular. Good lighting will help you to choose the best colors for your beautiful home. Read up on internet for LED types to buy for helping with color. Do painting last if possible. You have some reading & looking to do & you do not want to make wrong choices. Paint your bathroom & bedroom windowsills upstairs as you stated earlier. What a gem you have. You will love living in this historic home when you are settled.

Probably go ahead with your rugs. Check on Craigs list for old oriental or Persian style. They will go with any colors you go with usually. Are classic & if you are lucky you could get a real jewel. Kilim & ikat are also great choice for rugs, but I do like the idea of a multi color stripe as shown earlier. Rugs are the foundation of a great room.

K, I have done 3 housefuls of lamps, fixtures and rugs (my boxer slide in the wood floors) This is what I have bought my things:

wayfair for furniture (best stuff all in one place and you can shop by sizes)
overstock for rugs. best prices ever.
lamps plus and plumps plus open box for fixtures and lamps. it might take a bit of time, but the prices are awesome.

PS I would add a runner to the stairs. kids and boxers and wood stairs are not a good combination.

Stair runners are usually quite reasonable. The hard thing is installation though I have never done it.

Ok well in the living room I was thinking the olive green sofa as seen in pic with one of the 3 diff trellis looking rugs rust, maroon or orange and grey and then against the fireplace wall maybe the blue?? Or would U think something else would look better im just not into stripes at all

I think your rust rug is it, especially if it will go in sofa room. Your pillow/s could have a touch of brighter tones, and other colors you like... the fuschia and bright orange in large quantity I picture in another kind of house with grey etc...

I came upon a house with paint colors you might want to see - called the Bellevue House on Advice of course.
School House Slate Martha Stewart Paint, and this comment: "The wall color is Sherwin Williams 6198 Sensible Hue. I love this color because it is a light blue- gray- green that expands the space."

Again, your color and lighting intermingle, one entirely affects the other. Also, just because you love a paint color, it doesn't mean it will look good on your walls. A color consultant knows which colors and paint manufacturers will work. He/she will also suggest certain finishes to suit you. With 15 people making suggestions for you online, your color plan will not be unified. It should flow from room to room.

Yes, get a color consultant to come in and see your new house, your furniture, the lighting, etc. It's not that expensive to do that--cheaper than buying different paints and winding up with a mish mash of colors that don't happen to work in your particular house.

That poster is on her THIRD color, and it still isn't working. When you have a special feature such as beautiful woodwork, it's time and cost effective to bring in a color pro so that the color selections work throughout the house, light conditions, furniture, etc.

I would pick a paint you like and use throughout the house for now. put your stuff in there, live a little with the house. Then see if you need to change some rooms. A unified color makes houses look bigger and more connected. take baby steps instead of trying to get everything done at once

With such beautiful wood I would go with a nice pale grey colour, it's neutral and will match anything...

My stairs are the original stairs(and my house is about 100 yr old) and I went with a pale grey and it seems to make the wood pop, we have to re-finish them this spring but are sticking with the dark stain. Best of luck with what you decided

also stair runners are a perfect spot to add those bright saturated colors you like.

Please take additional photos of the furniture in your current home that you do not intend to replace so that commenters have the big picture and can suggest complementary paint and rug colors. It's a good idea to start from the "givens"--wood trim, floor color, your olive sofa, and other furnishings you'll be keeping.

Also be careful visualizing paint colors on screen. Get sample pots at the paint store and paint oversize paint chips so you can see it in the room.
