Nursery wall art - how high to hang?!? Please help a first timer!

Hi all! - I'm hanging 8 different little animals in 11x14 frames above the dresser, which also serves as the changing table. How high above the dresser should these hang? I know, as he becomes more "mobile", he'll start grabbing up at the wall and I don't want them to fall on him!

The second question is, does the wall art in the next post have a place in this room? We are going to bring yellow in somehow with drapes and accessories. Where should the "love you to the moon and back" frame go? Maybe in between crib and glider?

Photo 1: Frame
Photo 2: Dresser/changing table
Photo 3: Better view of nursery (the only other wall space big enough for this many frames is above crib, and I'm afraid to hang anything there).

While I'm at it, I found this on clearance at Kohl's. Does it have a place anywhere? Maybe in between the crib and the glider? Yellow is an accent color - we're purchasing yellow drapes and some other yellow accents for the room.

I like the pattern for draped, but would rather them be turquoise (color of the shelves?). Assuming the pics will be hung 4 over 4, place the center line around 5.5'.

We don't want teal drapes because we want to bring in yellow as an accent color. The bedding is white and grey. Yes, there will be 2 rows of four. So I'm confused, middle of the 2 rows should be at 5 and a half feet?
I guess what I'm asking is, how high above the dresser should the bottom of the 2nd row be (how much room in between dresser and bottom of the photos so baby doesn't grab at them?)
Yes, that was my thought on height. How about painting the back of the shelve cubbies in the yellow also?

Thanks for the idea. I'll have to measure because I guess I'm not sure how much room that leaves between the dresser and the last frame (essentially, not sure how tall the dresser is). Thanks for the idea on the shelves - don't want any DIY projects, LOL.

Yellow drapes, YES. Chevron, no. You've already got stripes on one wall. Go with plain yellow or a different print. Yellow with white dots would be super cute! And congratulations on your little one!!!

ehanback - thanks for the feedback on the drapes! I will consider that!! I don't love the chevron, just want to bring yellow in somehow. But what about the wall art? That's really the main question here. How high above the dresser should the bottom of the wall art be (so baby doesn't grab it/accidentally knock it down? Thanks!

I thought the same about the drapes initially, but also know that babies love big bold patterns
  • 11 years ago
Still shopping around for drapes, bigger concern is really the wall art, and how high, at a minimum, it should be above the dresser to avoid baby reaching at it and accidentally pulling it down. I'd love some more curtain suggestions though.

Couldn't agree more with ehanback. Chevron will not work with the stripes. Land of Nod also has yellow curtains; however, I think I like ehanback's better. I would center the picture arrangement with the top of the blue shelf (the gap between the two rows will line up with the top of the shelf). If it's any higher I would find another spot for it.

I like these trellis drapes. Thoughts?

I'm still really confused on how much room (inches, let's say) I should leave between the bottom of the frame and the dresser. I think I just keep phrasing the question wrong.

    I like those!

I have been looking for an answer for you, and I've got nothing. :( Sorry! I haven't had any of my own, and all Google seems to tell me is to not hang ANYTHING there, and then there are pictures of stuff that's easier within baby's reach.

So, here's my math. The average 2 year old is around 34 in long. So 17 in from baby's sternum to fingertips. Width of change table is probably around 20 in, so 10 in from center to wall. According to Pythagorus... if a=10, c=17, then b=13.7... SO, I figure you're safe at anything over 14 in.

I think to put them so high baby cant reach will be awkwardly high as you'd want the center of the arrangement to be at eye level. I would consider using that heavy duty double sided tape so that they can't be pulled down as opposed to putting the photos so out of reach it looks off. You will be attending the baby at the changing table always - it's not like over a crib where they will be unattended - so for me the height is not a huge concern as long as they're secured.

    P.s. I like ehanbak's arrow drapes the best. :)

Thanks! I know, putting them up out of reach does make them awkwardly high. But I want to avoid any disasters. We're hanging with nails so I'm afraid...
I like the arrow print drapes but they're not long enough (want 95")

Hi Bonnie, I'd go with ehanback's math regarding the spacing for the baby animal pics. What size is the "Love You to the Moon and Back?" Could you put it on the wall to the left of the window?

Just wanted to say I remember your other post about the nursery regarding colors, drapes, lamps. I mentioned our daughter's gray/white/blue nursery reminded me a bit of yours. Here's something else...the attached was a shower gift.

I love to hang pictures, but I would not hang these above the changing table or the crib. Too dangerous. I think they would be cute in two vertical lines on each side of the tall window. Then he could probably see them from his crib/bed. The lowest one should be at least 4 feet high to be out of reach for awhile. P.S. I do professional design and I love the chevron curtains!

chloe - Thank you! Yes, your daughter's nursery was beautiful. How funny about the I love you to the moon and back canvas. Seems like the nurseries have a lot in common. The one in my room is 12x12, so pretty small. The wall to the left of the window won't actually work when the drapes are in place (there won't be enough room left over).

libmaly - thank you so much! I worried about hanging over the changing table too, but it really is the only place I think I have room. To the sides of window won't really work once the curtains are in place (the size is deceiving, there won't be enough room for drapes and frames). Thanks for your opinion on the chevron curtains. You don't think they're too much against a vertically striped wall?

I took some photos of the other wall space I have. The first one is to the left of the crib. A closet door swings open on to the wall, so it seems silly to hang the animals there. The other is to the right of the crib (between crib and glider). In a few days, there will be a side table there.

Bonnie, as I recall, our daughter's Love You to the Moon was about 12x12, too. If you don't find the right wall space, could you set it on a easel on a table or dresser? The colors seem like a nice fit for your nursery.
Maybe you could use a deep yellow roman blind inside the window frame instead? Then the pics would work on the sides. The room really feels too narrow for curtains. Blinds would grow with him, too.
The faux white blinds were just installed throughout the entire home so I'm not going to replace them. It's either the blinds with no curtains or with curtains, LOL.

I say over the changing table makes the most sense. There will be times later when the baby will be able to stand up in bed when waking up from the nap and be tempted to touch the pics. BUT over the changing table, you will always be there and able to stop the little fingers from touching. And once it becomes just a dresser, well, no little fingers then, either. I would also take in to consideration the changing table part when you hang the art and make sure it will still look nice once that part is no longer there and it is just a dresser. Also, think about what might be placed on the dresser and if you want it blocking the art. I like the idea of colorful art for the little one to look at, too.

abby-thanks! The question really isn't about where to put them, though. I know I want them over the changing table. I'm trying to figure out how much room or empty space there should be between the topper and the bottom of the frames (for safety reasons and to make sure the baby can't reach up and grab them).

Guess I got confused....sorry. I would measure the height of the changing table part we see in white and hang them that high above it. Does that make sense? If the side is, say, 2 inches tall, I would have the bottom be two inches above it. I do not see the baby reaching for the picture to be a problem. I would think it might make it crooked on the wall, but not fall. Again, you will be there to gently move his hand away if you have to.

Put them up with nails but then secure the bottom with the double sided tape.

I wouldn't put the framed photos above the changing table. I'd put them somewhere else and put things that are soft and have no hard corners so if your baby grabs he won't hurt himself

I've gotten a lot of feedback from "been there done that" moms who say they've hung stuff above their changing table without incident. It's a supervised area. Above the crib is a no-no for me (and for most, apparently) because it's not always supervised. One mom said, with a boy, I should just be prepared to possibly have to wipe off urine on occasion, LOL.
