Leave the painting of the cabinets for last. I like what you have done, your cabinets are a nice design & don't need to be changed yet, regardless of what has been said. It looks completely different already. Maybe check out a butcher block section for the island as suggested. Shop around for solid counters. I would go with a marble look white quartz rather than a granite. Less maintenance & more timeless. Do a porcelain subway tile backsplash, off white or a marble look, running bond pattern, tight grout lines with a light gray grout. Very economical, easy DIY, timeless, classic look. If you went with an oil rubbed bronze cup drawer pulls & small round knobs in same finish for doors will make one world of a difference in the look of the kitchen.
Love the pendants above the island, also love the metal counter stools. You are moving in the right direction. One idea for a change up next after these things are done would be to address the island first. You could apply a bead board panel around the island. Either paint it a dark color or white, Add some ornate corbels to the island under the bar. You could also go a little larger on the counter top for the island when it is replaced so you have more knee room. Make sure you install under counter lighting with LED lights (also DIY). Go in baby steps, small things first, don't overspend, stay classic, not trendy. Have fun. You will stay in love with your cabinets and the kitchen as a whole.
