Regretting choices...help!

I was all excited to do our living room over but regret some of my choices. We put in new dark flooring, which I love. The room needed a square carpet which was hard to find, so I went with just a regular carpet and had it bound. Not crazy about the color. Then I was inspired to do 4 chairs, which I had seen on Houzz...regretting that now, but the chairs were not cheap, so I have to make it work. I'm going to either make pillow covers for the pillows or find new pillows with a pop of color. I just need help in trying to pull it together. Maybe a floor lamp or tall plant in the corner or corners? Would appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks

I have always pictured my main living area in the design you have chosen. Everyone on equal footing, comfortable & not straining to see everything. Such a great choice you made. I also think staying with a plain area rug with having it bound was another big step out of the box.

Hi, Deb Heidmiller! I think the only thing my eye got stuck on when viewing your room was the kind of big, clunky white lantern, which really is no big deal. Gosh, I should design a room that has only one minor flaw. Kudos to you. Keep us posted with any changes.

Lantern is gone, Eugeny. Updated picture just a few posts up.

Still my favorite room on Houzz!

Here's what I would do..... in order of priority and ease of accomplishment:

brick throw over the back of a chair.

large brick colored tray with some accessories...candles or lantern, books or whatever.

Try a soft palm type plant in the corner. can be faux.

striped pillow covers. more bold, less flowery. These can be changed with the season, at least summer ones and winter ones.

    frame the art.

Border the rug with a 12" wide brick and cream swirl or stripe or geometric pattern. If you do a stripe here, then use swirl with the pillows.

High gloss crown molding the color of the chairs or perhaps the color of the floor. This can be faux wood.

All of these are finishing touches. Have Fun!

I know this is an old thread, but I'm so impressed by everyone's input into this room and for the owner to have made just the right changes. Cool group effort and ultimately a great room!

If I were to make any additions to the room I would add something organic, maybe a pair of large round woven baskets for all your reading material and possibly handwork? Not sure but feel the room needs softening and less shine.

I would also replace pillows to bigger solid color, all red or deep orange but each one done in a different bigger size and texture.

I think your lamp need an exact match, and would set it on the console ro the right of the round mirror and remove all the little things you have there. If there is another place in the room for a small table place the items on that table for display.

Modern sleek fan with no light and a pair of light sconces on either side of your art to bring light into the room

Possible sconces for either side of painting.

Just some pics to move idea along. I adore your blown glass orange/red table lamp, does it have a match for other side of room?

Funny you should say that! I found a large wicker basket that I thought I could use for a base for a round coffee table...I just need to get a top made. Where did you find those ones? I also got a corner light that arches over the chair. Needs a different colour shade, this one is too white. I have ordered a throw that is brick red with some brown in. I was also think today of moving the lamp to that exact spot! Great minds think alike! I think I need to look for a longer console table for under the mirror though. Good idea on the pillows too and ditto on the ceiling fan. Thanks

    Work in progress.....

Sorry.....can't remember.....have you had the wedding yet?

Yes, we did have the wedding on the 25th. It went perfect! The weather was beautiful and my yard and the decorations turned out exactly how I had envisioned it. Another one in October!!

Just what I wanted to hear and thanks for the pic, too.

Another one that soon.....you will be a pro for that one even more so!!!

Love that outdoor space and know you enjoy it even without a wedding there....but the memories will help that enjoyment, too. Sooooo pretty!

Here's another shot that shows the pergola better.

I'm getting off pretty easy with the next wedding, it's all being held at a hotel. No more yard weddings for this gal...too much stress and work! Lol
  • 11 years ago

The pergola is my favorite!!! And is that a little potting/garden shed?

Thanks. My husband and I built it together! The shed houses a lawn tractor on one side and storage for yard and everything else on the other. It was actually a barn style shed and we added the addition to it for the tractor.

Well, now I am extra impressed with that pergola.....you and hubby MADE IT! OMG!!! The shed....love the windows and the doors and the flower boxes. Just a fun tough right there! Is your home that color, too?

Yes, our house is that colour too. Yeah, my poor husband...I keep thinking of new projects!

It is sooooo funny to hear you say that about your husband and projects as I said the same thing a few hours ago to someone. Mine has been working up a storm since the end of May, but it feels so good when things are crossed off the list and we step back and admire it all!!!

Isn't that the truth! We kept telling everyone that when the wedding was over, we were going to do nothing for the rest of the summer. Well, that lasted a week before we were back at it! Haha!
Add a zebra skin rug onto of carpet under ottoman, big canvas over fireplace, love the chandelier, add pop of colour in cushions and floor lamp, your chairs and room look lovely, wouldn't take much to add bits and pieces. You could if you want add some trim to your curtains if you so wish, I just put a row of ribbon down the side of my drapes with glue gun, made big difference

Just hit the more info prompt and it will take you to the site. I am not sure of size, was hoping for big, but like the style and the dark color againt the natural. Same with sconces; wanted the light to show and have the base look good wiht chairs with the strong linear lines. Happy hunting.

When ever I post a pic I just type in Houzz and then the subject and keep looking till I find a specific item. Trust me there are tons!

Love the wedding pics. We had our first two daughter marry three months apart. July November. We were living in Chicago and the weddings were in Utah and California. Lots of fun tripping! Actually all our daughters, we have six, married far from Chicago so we did a lot of tripping. Our third daughter's future mother in law has a daughter with special needs and she told Karen let me organize it all and your family can just show up. She did and was so happy to plan a wedding, and we did and it was wonderful. Of course we sent a check too!

Chicago to Montana is a trek!

Personally, I look be what you've done here. I would add some color, go with the red from the lamp. plus, I think you need more "task" lighting, like another lamp. (but I just do not like overhead lighting--it's too harsh).

I ran across this room picture and it reminded me of your cool room. Just done in your rooms opposite colors but your room for sure!

Area rug aligns with position of square center table.

    Thanks! I love those colours!

Maybe you might trying shifting your square rug to align with the square ottoman like in the orange room.......might be the snap you are looking for in the room!

Hmm...never thought of that? I'd really like to see what a round table would do for the room too......

Groveraxle does it so well every time. Love the dramatic colors in the art over the fireplace and especially like the idea of keeping the tropical fan (minus the light kit) but I'd go for British colonial "tropical" feel with a tall palm in a corner and something pretty in a different wood - no more dark beyond the floor and the chairs. You can google British colonial style and you'll find tons of inspiration. I also like Pleasant Living's idea for setting the chairs in pairs facing one another. It would be easy to try them and change back if you didn't like them but I think it would open up the space and make it much more inviting. I think once you find your big art for over the fireplace, you can pick colors for pillows and throws and other accessories. If you love the red lamp, you keep the red lamp. And you keep the tree picture and work it into a gallery wall - a feast for the eyes of those sitting in the chairs in front of the windows.

Your room has an elegant formal look to it.

Have you considered floor lamp(s) for the corner(s).

If you're wanting a more relaxed look, consider two chairs with backs toward one wall and the other two along the wall at a right angle to the first wall.

    Alternately

One chair in the corner and one along the wall to one side of that and two along the wall on the other side of that.

Love the color on your walls and your white chairs, also the painting suggested by whynottryit. It adds depth and light! The red orange highlights with that green and white are just awesome! Can't wait to see what you have done so far re your hint of August 19th! If you have not already done so, I would suggest a larger round or square tray on the dark ottoman.

I would rearrange the chairs, so that they are paired and facing each other with a smaller rectangular glass top coffee table between the paired facing chairs. Move the cabinets and place two chairs against the wall opposite the large window. Have you considered replacing the carpet with a muted Tabriz type color and pattern? I would also get rid of the overhead fan and consider a lighter shade of paint on the walls.

Your room looks fantastic; you must be so pleased. I do think one solid pillow as Grover suggested would be a fun, quirky touch.

I think your room is lovely! I wouldn't add plants or anything to the corners. I agree that some pillows to introduce an accent color would be nice.

Have you considered adding a bookcase? Oversized art that you love?

I don't think I have room for a bookcase in the room. If you take a look at some of the afters, I was able to find a large canvas. Thanks so much for your input.

I do plan on making a few changes but we have wedding number 2 next weekend and it's keeping me busy!
