Definitely a rose. Which one? I have no idea but I have destroyed my hands on enough of the things doing landscape jobs (though, they are slightly better than junipers hedges).

I can't be certain, but, from the flower, I'd say it's probably an 'Austrian Copper' rose! [Sure wish we still had some functionality with the pics! Can't even right click and open in a new window anymore, where they can be enlarged at least a little bit!] Check out the linked search page to see if it looks right! If it is and you "let it go," it'll get HUGE! It can be left to "flop" to become a "ground cover," or it could be "trained" up something--trellis, fence, etc. It blooms for a fairly short period of time--but can be really spectacular when it is blooming! I checked a couple sites and couldn't find if it blooms on "old wood" only or on old and new wood! If it blooms on old wood only and you cut down last year's canes, you don't get flowers the following year, but if you had just cut yours down and it did bloom, then it must bloom on new wood too, so you could cut it down whenever you wanted to--to "control" it, or help to "train" it the way you want to.

I can't think of anything else that might be helpful! Ask if you have other questions! If you don't think that's what it is, maybe somebody else has some other ideas.

Makes much more sense than the Candy Oh - in looks and temperament, but also anything growing when I bought this place was probably planted in the 60s-80s so older than most of the newer varieties like that. (And neglected since then)

This was growing wild when I bought the place and had come through pavers, etc. However, with a bit of management it's turning into quite a beautiful space (and I'm not usually over fond of roses).

Do you think I could propagate it at all? Possibly by cuttings? It's an enclosed space so a bit difficult to chop out new growth suckers but maybe. Might just chop off a few up pieces and see what happens - do you think I should get growth or old?

And yes! I was lisaluwho on the old system - I'm not sure why it changed me or how to change it back :)

If it suckers—and if it was coming up thru pavers I assume
it does—all you have to do is to look around the “outside” of the plant for
“small” plants that are rooted and can be (hopefully fairly easily) dug up and
potted as separate plants. I think that
might be easiest to do when it starts actively growing in spring. If you can’t find suckers, I’m not sure! I suspect you could take one of the longer
(and smaller) canes and bend it over so it’s touching the ground and “attach”
it to the soil at some places, or bury parts of the cane slightly in the soil,
and wait to see if roots develop at those points—I think that might work, but
I’m really not sure! Maybe some other
Rose Person will be along with more “rose expertise” than I have! I’m not really a Rose Person! But I know some folks around here have
started them from cuttings, just have never done it myself, so not sure of the
best way! David, can you start them in
straight perlite?
