Is the flooring tile or vinyl? Any close-ups of cabinet hardware?

I'd also take off the scalloped edging over the sink window, and update the sink and faucet.

I love this kitchen. I'd put in a white gas stove if possible. Do you have more pics of the rest of it?

You have a great foundation to start with! Here are a few ideas to update your look with minimal cost:

1. Switch out the gold/brass knobs and replace them with black. You might also consider putting pulls rather than knobs on the drawers.

2. Install an above range microwave. This will update your look AND get you more counter space.

3. Remove or replace gingerbread cut out above sink. (May be able to just saw off scalloped edge.)

4. Coordinate remaining items (tea pot, utensil holder, toaster oven, hand towel etc). The blue in the utensil holder and hand towel are in competition with the black and green in the backsplash. You could go with a bold color if you like, but it needs to be more purposeful!

I should have given more details: hardware is faded brass, paint on several cabinets is peeling, and the white linoleum counter is chipped in places.
I've thought of replacing all hardware, removing piece over sink, painting backsplash(?), new counter tops (but what material? Color?).

I think painting the walls a dark green or blue would look good. Update the hardware and appliances. I wouldn't paint the backsplash, I think it is attractive. Repaint the cabinets white, but spend the time on prep and use a satin finish. Low cost, but high labor. If that isn't your thing, have them done professionally. Price out all components of the remodel before you commit. Then you can decide what gives the most bang for your buck.

The current brass knobs with the floor looks too dotty. I think pulls like these would look better. They are by Amerock.

while the scalloped trim is dated, so is the floor and the cabinets. i think its better to embrace it as a sweet package than make it a mish mash. it's a nice kitchen, not every kitchen has to look alike.

I like the scalloped edge:) - but I love vintage. If it is not your style take it down. I like the backsplash but since counters are worn out and need to be replaced, you could do the backsplash too. Pretty laminate counters will keep cost down and they are hardy. Personally, I would not put the microwave above the oven because I am short and have a hard time reaching up there and have nearly inflamed myself with blouse falling over the oven while I reach for the microwave. You might talk to a local cabinet maker about converting a cabinet to a microwave shelf and or some open shelving - display shelves, plate rack, wine rack or he could make you a few doors that have glass panels. I have had unfinished doors made to replace broken doors by a cabinetmaker and he did not charge too much.

Sand off peeling paint and prime with a good bonding primer like Zinsser BIN or Zinsser 123.

If the floor is tile and good shape, keep it. If it is vinyl, see if you can replace with wood to match the rest of the house. That might be expensive and need to wait.

Other vintage touches - if you like that - would be a curtain under the sink and vintage dishes on the wall or soffit.
