Could you try moving your couch under the window and place tv across sitting on a long credenza, as it's feeling very squeezed in. I would change the lamp shade to a black square shape to modernize. Bring in black as your third color when selecting a rug and pillows. I would add a grouping of black and white prints on the back wall and you could spray paint the small table black. If you are keeping all of the plants, place them together in a corner and coordinate with black and red pots.

By the way, is the TV's current location where it needs to stay? Any possibility of changing that if need be? Not saying it can't work where it currently is, but there may be other (better) layouts if you have any flexibility there.

How do you feel about having the TV (on a different wall) or window be your focal point?

Hard to tell in the picture, but is there a "4th wall"?

Bright white shutters with a wide slat for great view through would look dynamite in that space. I can't pin point why, but it doesn't feel like that window is asking for an accent window covering (i.e. any bright, bold fabrics etc.) so the shutter would lend you the nice clean lines you have going on already in a really sophisticated way.

@Carol Singletary: thanks for all the great ideas! A rug is a definite must have for this room and we like the idea of grouping the plants.

@Maureen and @Avery: thank you as well! I agree about the TV feeling squeezed in. We did this on purpose because the sunlight from the window causes too much glare when the tv is on the other wall. We also wanted the TV to be kind of out of the way so as to not make it a focal point of the room . It's hard to explain but where entrance to our house is, the TV (in its current spot) is more 'hidden' - if it is on the opposite wall it is point-blank the first thing you see when you walk in.

@Gordon's Window Decor - I like the idea of the wide slat blinds. The window is south facing so there is a heckuva lot of sun that comes in the room. That's great 90% of the time, but it is not great when watching tv (the glare is a major factor).

One other question - if our colours at this point are red, grey, black (with the chair we now have a bit of green in there), what do people think we can do to add a bi more of a bright colour here and there? What colour would work?

This chair's fabric now changes things in regards to coordination and color choices. To really make this room work, I would repaint using a dark mocha, ignore the green in the fabric, as there are other colors you are having to compliment. Use a mocha shag (or whatever) rug and pillows that contain mocha and/or black. Can the tv be placed across the corner and move the side table to other side, so couch can be centred on the wall. Or place your couch on the back wall and tv on the wall to the right as you walk in - if possible. I know you didn't want to move tv to left wall. Hope this helps.

Good points everyone - the chair does not 'fit' so we are moving it to another room.

I think our next move will be to add an area rug (staying in the grey/black/red scheme) and see how things look at that point. Ideas on the area rug are welcomed!

If you want more of a serene look, use a grey that is similar to your wall color. For a more vibrant look go with red/black/grey graphic. Be sure to compliment with the same hues with your pillow choices and art.
