It depends where the chair is being used. At a small writing desk I would want a chair without wheels but at the desk where I work, I would want wheels.

I like the look of an antique chair at home - but I just use my computer. The swivel is handy if you have to move around a get to reach your printer, files, etc.

I'm actually sorry to have let it go, but when I renovated our office to have an L-shaped desk running the length of two entire walls, and needed a set of chairs to coordinate (each family member chose their own so long as they were all black), we needed wheels to get around, reach the file drawers, printer, supplies, etc.

Then, with a Great Pyrenees seated at the base of the chair, we have to get up and climb over him anyway, LOL.

Though I prefer the look of wheel-less chairs, I spend a lot of time at my desk and swivel and reach and move around, so it's casters for me. I do want some style with that function, though, and skip the hulking, high-backed "executive leather" models. Nothing against those--they can be wildly comfortable--but they overwhelm my desk area. Agree with others: small no-wheels chair at a small writing desk.

I am really wanting an Aeron chair for husband's home office; it has back support and moves in the directions he needs. I went on EBay, know little about it but did set up account and put wanted for this chair; seems a lot of dealers show up, so trying local listing! But I do know that the originals meant for stars and such in Ca. would range into the thousands, and this smaller version, but it's a good chair, is ideal..... only a C is what he needs, and $ is good, and it is perfect.

Casters, for sure, we have a Mirra and an Aeron. The Mirra I found for almost half off, but the Aeron was a steal! I found it for $60 on Craigslist.

I was looking on Craigslist for a dining room table, when I spotted this ad for various items that had a nice table, but listed a "black desk chair" for $60. I'm looking at the picture thinking, "I know a Herman Miller Aeron when I see one, and this is an Aeron!" I kept thinking, "There is no WAY this guys is selling the chair for $60. He had to forgot a zero."

The next day, I went by to check out the table, but more importantly, The Chair! When I arrived, I tried not to look at it too hard, but every line, every angle screamed, "Genuine!"

Curious if he realized what it was, I asked, "That chair is that ...?" I didn't finish my question. He replied, "Oh yeah, it's one of those ergonomic chairs. They bought it for me at my job, but I bought a new one, so I don't need this one anymore."

All I could think was, "Did he say, 'One of those??? One of those?????' It's not, 'One of those', ergonomic chairs, it is THE Ergonomic Chair, by which all other ergonomic chairs are based!" LOL..

When I got home, I looked for some tell-tale sign that it was a real Aeron. Finally, I found the logo on the back, which said, "Herman Miller". JACKPOT!!! :D

I have both, the one at my writing desk is just a plain chair but the one at my comp has casters and supports well regarding back posture . The one without wheels is good for carpeted floors while the one with casters, really only moves efficiently on a tiled floor. I like too that I can roll to my bookcase to move around so that is a big advantage--flexibility!

Design wise I prefer a chair without casters, but form must follow function and so wheels it is.... I just wish a designer could come up with a really slick type of wheel that looks good. They are so clunky...

For me it would depend on the setting. In a house with an open floor plan I'd want the chair without casters. The chair could function not only as a desk chair, but as additional seating in the living room or eating area. If it is being used in a dedicated home office, then I'd go with casters.

Your flooring choice may also need to be considered. Casters on carpet don't work well. Casters on stone floors may have you flying across the room if you kick off too hard. Wood is great with casters. But one chair I owned put some not so lovely roller marks all over my wood floors. I ended up getting a chair without casters.

Cindy, I was thinking the same thing. When my desk was on a tile floor, no casters was my preference, because the wheels rolled too easily. Now, I have a rug in the office, and our chairs have casters. The rug keeps the wheels in place, while sitting, and the casters makes it easier to move around, when I need to turn to get a file, or get up.
