Love your choices! We have very similar couches in our living room, and they are gorgeous. I think you've convinced me to head over to our MG showroom this week to deal with our own couch/rug dilemma.

Hi Betsy, so excited for you and fingers crossed that you see something you like at MG. Sofa and sectional hunting is (undoubtedly) fun for me but can also get daunting at times.....especially when you want to make certain you're making the "right" decision. But I have no doubt you will make the right choice, especially with the help of Houzzers. :-)

Btw not sure where you live, but MG in the Plano, TX area have both the Reese sofa and Keaton sectional displayed in their showroom....both of which are offered as sleepers too.

I love your choices Avery! The rug is beautiful and I love the neutral fabric for the sofa! I guess you won't be sure until the sofa arrives, but I'm thinking the peacock chairs might work out very well. The rug looks as if it has just the slightest hint of blue and I'd think the chairs would be just great with the sofa fabric.

Is that little rug sample in the picture with the leg stain and sofa fabric a close up of the rug you got? In that picture, it looks so neutral. In the picture showing more of the rug, I do see a blue tint, but still quite neutral.

Thank you Ann....I was so hoping that you wouldn't think the rug was too boring. I realize in the photo, it's hard to see and feel the dimensions/textures of this rug.....but nonetheless, it really is a relatively simple rug.

My thought process in choosing it was based on several things, in addition to the reasons I mentioned previously.

First, we may eventually get a rug for under the breakfast nook table....and my gut tells me that area will probably need a bit more pattern and/or color since right now it's pretty neutral. Other than in the rug and drapes (if we decide to add panels), there's not much more opportunity to add textures, patterns and perhaps (bolder) colors....whereas in the family room, we can do that through pillows, throws and drapes (plus the art over the fireplace already has color in it too). So I wanted to be somewhat foreward-thinking and choose a family room rug that would be easier to coordinate a (patterned and/or bolder) breakfast nook rug with.

Secondly, when choosing pillow patterns and perhaps colors/patterns for new chairs or for potentially a bench/ottoman(s) in the family room....the rug we chose (hopefully) will be easier to coordinate those items with too. (I've noticed that I tend to lean toward bolder or bigger geometric & ikat patterns in throw pillows so wanted a more subtle rug to balance that look....).

Thirdly, we've been seriously considering changing the coffee table to something like the Noguchi. Our only hesitation on that is that it's glass and with kids not sure if we want to do that. (Although, we did see one at a local DWR and the glass is thick, heavy and stable....so who knows? :-))

Regardless, as you know, we hope to infuse a little bit of that MCM design.....so with something like the Noguchi (or maybe something similar to the ones by Worlds Away or Brownstone with hairpin legs), we didn't want a rug that could draw too much attention away from or "fight" with it.

Anyway, so sorry for this long-winded post .... and hopefully I'm heading in the right direction. If not, please try to re-direct me (like you did with the sofa)! :-)

The Noguchi is great, isn't it? When my daughter and I were shopping for her house, we saw it at our DWR too. It was love at first sight for me. There weren't many things in that store that weren't love at first sight though:)))). You can just imagine how pleased I was when I saw her new nook chairs recently. I'm so glad they splurged and bought those. We're going up there tonight to babysit the grandgirls and I can't wait to have dinner in one of those chairs!

I think you're making fantastic choices. I love neutrals and rugs with texture. I had a Houzz dilemma that resulted in a neutral, wool, RH rug for my living room and I adore that rug.

Are you thinking of a bench for the area opposite the peacock chairs (I know those aren't a firm decision yet, lol)? I think a swivel chair would be really great for TV viewing in that spot, but a bench would look very cool.

What do you think of the Room and Board swivel chair I posted with the chrome base? I have no clue if that would work in your room, until we see where you are once the sofa arrives and you decide if the peacock chairs will stay and if the coffee table will change (I do like your current one too), but I thought that chair was edgy and fun. Certainly a modern way to incorporate a swivel chair.

Love the chaise. It's called a right side. It's when you are looking at sectional to determine which side. Yours is perfect if TV is going next to FP on that side. I like Two chairs in window. But I would leave out table between. And chair on other side should be swivel. For functionality. A very big 36" or bigger square coffee table. Color on sofa should be neutral add color in chairs. 8x10 area rug. Think of rugs as art for your floor. Good job.

Like the idea of keeping peacock chairs. Love the color.

And yes, that is the rug sample that is shown with the fabric and wood sample above. It does look a little more neutral in there, right? I'll post a picture of the Desmond in the MG showroom sitting on the same style rug (but in the neutral version). We almost went with the more neutral rug but then we figured we needed to bring in some of the blue.

And you know I love anything R&B including those chairs you posted. I guess it's challenging for me to envision whether or not their too "edgy" next to the Desmond? I may need to wait til the sofa gets here to figure it out.....although I would love to have it all decided beforehand.

Same dilemma with whether or not to keep the peacock chairs. There are actually a few other chairs I've been seriously considering (to take their place). I'd love to have it figured out (and ordered, if that's the route we take) soon. :-) as much as we like the peacock chairs, I think they may not "fit" in our overall vision? That's where I need you all to help me figure it out! :-)

Oh, and I was thinking either a bench or 2 ottomans to sit centered in front of the fireplace OR 1 ottoman to sit centered on front of 1 of the 2 chairs that will be in front if the window OR just an ottoman for the new single chair (closest to the TV area). What do you think?

Btw, so you think I should keep the current coffee table and not go with something more MCM like the Noguchi? I love our coffee table too....but gosh, I really, really love the Noguchi!

Avery, would love to see your rooms with the window treatments open to see more your space with more natural light coming in.
You are taking photos on your phone, right? What kind of phone is it? Do you post this pics directly from the phone to Houzz through the app? I'm guessing the pics flip upside down because of a setting? Perhaps the screen needs to be locked when you take the pic? Maybe you need to edit them before you post them? When you post pics to a social media format, do they flip?

Hi Toni, yes I've been taking photos from my phone or hubby's phone. The "grainy" ones are from my phone but typically they'll post right side up. The ones taken from hubby's phone are better quality but they've been posting sideways and now upside down lol!

And yes, I'll post some pics of the room with more natural light...maybe over the weekend?

Avery, I'm at my daughter's now (the chairs are fantastic:) The kids just went to bed. I'd wait until the sofa arrives to move forward with decisions, trying the blue chairs at that time and then going from there. I can't process to many steps at one time and I do better seeing something in the room and then I can better see how the next item might look. I'm sure the pros and others can see the big picture, but I like the step by step method, lol:). Oh, now I see what you have in mind for a bench. Again, I'd get the sofa, figure out the blue chairs or other, decide if the current coffee table will stay and then tackle the third chair (I really think a swivel chair would be great there) and bench decisions.

By the way, my daughter's fairly new Ethan Allen sofa is a 2 cushion sofa and it's great! I have a 3 cushion sofa and when I lay on it, the cushion crack is at a very uncomfortable position. This one is much better - I'm laying on it right now, lol:). I'm thinking your Desmond is two cushion, right?

Here's an eclectic design combining different styles.

@ Ann, I am so jealous of DD's new chairs! At the time I ordered the chairs I have now.....which I love btw....I hadn't quite realized or understood what my (preferred) design style really was. Same with pretty much everything I have up until now. If I could rewind the clock and knowing what I know now, I think I would've done something similar to DD's chairs. In fact, we may just get 2 of those for the computer desk area upstairs. At one time I ordered chairs for that area from C&B then cancelled it after I convinced hubby that we should really get the Eames chairs instead. Where did DD get hers from?

As for the other chairs, even though I know you're right in suggesting I wait, I'm not sure if I'm patient enough to do so. We were hoping to get this room done by last Christmas....and here we are 3 months later! :-(

Would it be ok to just "shop" for alternatives ?

And yes the Desmond has 2 cushions. :-)

@ LB, thank you so much for the pics......I especially like the 1st one you posted....probably because of the color and I LOVE that coffee table shown in there. Do you happen to know who makes that? I know I've seen it before just can't recall the manufacturer.

And ironically, I would have never classified our style as "eclectic".....but I guess it's just having to evolve into a more eclectic style?

Problem is we can't figure out how to do that....what to or what not to incorporate so it doesn't look "hodge podge"..... That's definitely something not easy to master.

How do you mix our love for MCM and even more contemporary elements in a space that has such a transitional (even traditional) vibe?

Whatever you like Avery, I'm certain will work. Nate Berkus once said...... If you buy something you love.... it not only shows who you are but you will find a place for it. Don't be afraid of mixing styles. It's always more interesting.

DD ordered the chairs from the local DWR. I think they took about 6 weeks to arrive. I'm thinking your blue chairs might work fine but it's always fun to come up with another plan just in case. Will your rug take 6 weeks too?

I don't think the rug should take 6 weeks but there may be another delivery fee if we request to deliver it ahead of time. I'll check though. I seem to recall that there's a way for us (hubby) to pick up the rug if it arrives earlier....to avoid a 2nd delivery fee.

Avery - we've had our Noguchi coffee table for 23 years, and still love it! It's very solid and has survived the presence of 3 boisterous boys. When they were v little we put pipe insulation around the edge to protect against bumps, and have always banned sitting on it, but otherwise it hasn't needed any special precautions.

By the way, I think "eclectic" is just a fancy way of saying hodgepodge that's done well!

I like C which is the grey sofa with chrome legs! The material of the Sofa could really do a living room a lot of justice. In my opinion, brown can't do too much too your home. You may find some nice pieces to match but once you're ready to switch those pieces out you will need new furniture. Grey goes along way! Not sure if you read all the comments (and don't blame you if you didn't) but we ended up with a MG sofa that wasn't choice A, B or C. We picked the "Desmond" from MG, similar lines to C, but different too.

I'm truly hoping we can still infuse some flavor of the MCM and Scandinavian design styles we like.....so I'll really need all of your help when the new sofa arrives! I'm thinking we can incorporate it through tables, pillows, accessories and new side chairs. Do you think that's possible?

Love your definition of "eclectic" @ drdeb......after seeing your home I know that I really need your input to help ours look "Transitional MCM/Scandinavian ECLECTIC" vs. "Hodgepodge"....lol.

I didn't read all the comments, Avery, mostly just skimmed (usually keeping an eye out for Grover's terrific renderings!). I actually don't even know what MG stands for! Probably another great store we don't have in Canada. Sigh.
Anyway, you seem to have great taste and a keen interest in this whole crazy decorating thing, so I'm sure you'll make wonderful choices! If I have any suggestions I think might be worthwhile, I'll let you know.

Ironically our DWR sales associate just called a few days ago about a sale they're having. I specifically asked about the Noguchi and she said it wasn't part of the current sale but come this May it will be. That would be just after we get the new sofa delivered I think.....just in time! :-)

Oh. Mitchell Gold! We actually do have a store here that carries them. And I did consider one of their sofas when I was looking- it was one of the ones featured on The Good Wife series.
Anyway that one you picked is lovely, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And I know other posters have warned about sofas with 2 cushions,but I think that's nonsense.our previous one had 2 cushions, and when things got busy, we regularly had 3 or even 4 people happily squashed there. Give 'em good food and wine, and there'll be no complaints!

Yes, I did! I had my heart set on this chair for such a long time! Finally placed an order for one (two wouldn't fit in my space). It should be arriving any day now :)

Oh, I like it Pracheeti! You know I love the red you're doing in that space and the chair will be such a nice addition to it. Ok, I'm going to find your thread now and play catch up since it sounds like I missed some things.

PS This project is on hold right now....sort of. I'm still looking for side chairs for our family room too but we have about 5 more weeks before the sofa arrives.

Although....I was hoping to decide on new chairs or to perhaps keep the peacock blue chairs we already have. Thing is the blue color in our very simple rug that we're getting may not work with the blue tone in the peacock chairs. Plus the fabric on the peacock chairs is actually a continuous Greek key pattern.....which I think may clash with some of the other patterns I end up choosing for the space (in pillows, etc.). So it's probable we will eventually get new chairs and put the peacock chairs in the master bedroom.

Once I have a few chair options narrowed down, I'll definitely need your input! :-)

Just a note Avery, You can mix different shades (tones) of blue (more interesting) does not have to match rug blue and chair blue :) You can also mix patterns and not have to stick to the same design patterns. More interesting too. Use what you like, it will all come together. If the blue chairs seem nicer for you in the master, then new chairs are in order :))

When mixing patterns, color is very important and just as important is the scale of the patterns. Large and smaller patterns mixed.

Thanks LB, as always, for your advice! Yes I tend to overthink too much (as you can probably tell) especially when it comes to our own space. Mind gets blocked because of it! And because I'm so wishy washy about decisions for ourselves, what will probably happen is that we will get to see the peacock chairs in the space with the new sofa and rug before any new chairs even get ordered and/or arrive.

So we will probably get to see how it all looks together....and I bet you'll be right about the different blue shades still working well together.

I'm pretty sure I'm just clinging to the hope that I'll find MCM style/inspired chairs that'll "go" with what I already have plus help to bring my vision to life!

Btw LB....finding the right pattern mix is not my forte especially when it comes to our own home......I'm really not confident with putting patterns together without feeling like it'll look "hodge podge" (as drdeb put it). ;-) So look for my smoke signals when the time comes!
