we can never pull the trigger!

it's been three years that we have lived in this house and we have made progress in other areas but the entry way (it is supposed to be a living room and dining room) remains totally empty. good place to play ball but not so welcoming. we love modern, colorful furniture. I don't know if we can make those dining chairs work for us anymore..... tend to like pretty pricey stuff from places like hive or dr but can't afford to furnish the whole place that way. any advice?

Seriously...do you need a dining room? Do you need a living room? Would you actually use either? Would these be set up just for show?

ikea has also some nice modern furniture at good prices. First you need to decide what would you use this room for.

That is basically what we do now! :) too young for skates but give u a a couple of years.... I don't think the rooms would be totally for show - my little girl loves reading and it would be nice to have a special place to sit that was just for a different kind of energy (not toys everywhere). and we do have people over for dinner some.... and it is in the FRONT of our house. makes me laugh that people always ask, when they come in, how long ago we moved in.... lolol

Embrace how you truly want to live in and use this space: art, music, game playing, theatre...such wonderful rooms. Think OUT OF THE BOX, and make it inspiring, useful, fun space for your family. Can't wait to hear/see what you do.

I think the rooms have great potential and I agree that with time you will find it nice to have separate areas where you can read of have a more formal dinner. Whether you call a room a living room or a reading room doesn't matter a hoot, having some comfortable seating and nice lighting will make the room inviting." If you build it they will come" , start with some seating like a comfy sofa or a couple of chairs and some lighting and see where you want to go from there. As for your dining room if you already have the furniture then just set it up and see how you like it.

Lovely craftsman style home! I would decorate with the craftsman style in mind. Surprised you purchased this style home with such modern taste. I would add small doses of your modern flare. Cozy reading room and for the dinning area, add a wood table and reupholster your chairs and paint them with flat paint. Good luck

Which wall faces north? And what do the windows look out on? The available natural light, time of day those rooms are bright, and how much or little you want to visually relate to the outdoor space beyond the room should play a big part in to how you design/conceive the space. (Do you have a curb shot of the house?) Consider thinking changing layout/function by season.

the windows with shutters face north. we are in the process of making the front yard nice...and the street is not too far away. there is nice light throughout the day there. thanks for the encouragement so far everyone....
