That appears to be Key West Gold granite and it can have a pinky/salmon effect depending upon how it is paired. It works well with off-white (no yellow undertone) or a very dark brown stain. It does not work well with the mid-tones as you have in your kitchen. Given the floor color, you could paint your cabinetry off-white. Then you can go with a simple backspash that picks up the off-white such as Adex Neri subway in bone. We have also paired a light travertine backsplash with Key West Gold to tone down the pink. Make sure your wall color does not read pink undertones.

I agree with Deborah , your best bet is to paint out the cabinets white or restain them a darker finish.Right now you have pink and orange trying to play together and it isn't working.

Deborah, Thank you. I have been told that the granite is "missouri Red" but then we wouldn't call it "key West" in St. Louis! It is very pink! You didn't say gray so I am thinking that would be a "don't" in your opinion. Do you have a favorite off-white paint that you hrecommend? Another question-do I have the window painted to match the cabinets?

And you just saw a fraction of the kitchen - there is lots more where that came from! I think the original planner must have been colorblind!! What do you think about all the glass?

You are welcome. Our favorite white is the old Duron Shell White, which is a warm white. You can have it mixed at Sherwin Williams (they bought out Duron) but make sure you tell them to use the Duron formula. We use the Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint on cabinetry. I would have it professionally prepped and painted - it will make a huge difference to have it sprayed vs brush painting. I would use the same white for the trim in the room - assuming you don't have an open concept space where there is no place to stop.

I like your cabinets; the granite not so much. If this were my kitchen, I'd leave the cabinets and replace the granite.

Would just a new backsplash work?

I think a new backsplash is a MUST. You should decide on/change the backsplash, then decide your cabinet color. I like the idea of either a white subway tile, or maybe even a gray. Then you can either do dark cabs with the light splash, or light cabs with a darker splash.

I don't think you will ever be happy with the pink - spend your money on new countertops. Don't paint the cabinets. They would look great with some new handles.

To downplay the pink in the stone, I believe you should take a grey (light or dark) ceramic tile and redo the backsplash. I would also take the tile all the way to the cabinetry like you currently have it. Changing this color will dramatically help the color of the stone. I love the glass front cabinets, however to create more contrast, it could be very fun to paint the interior of those cabinets in a similar color as you choose for the backsplash tile. I would make certain to not bring too much texture or pattern into the backsplash, I believe keeping it very simple will help you achieve the look you are going for. Good luck with it all!

Oh yeah, I'd change the hardware, too. And get rid of that little rail on top. (You'll notice it's gone in the renderings above.)

That's so funny Rosemary that you mentioned the Lily P dresses because I was going to mention that but I thought I might be a bit too cheeky. About the glass, I think that it looks a bit busy and the problem is you always have to have the things inside the cupboard looking perfect or the whole thing can be a bit higgledy piggledy. I would probably keep the glass only on the little cupboards flanking the window and put full doors on the rest of the uppers.

Groveraxle, thank you for your input AND for the pics! I tried to photoshop but my picture didn't turn out near as well as yours. I would love to replace the granite but, alas, I can't. And there is so MUCH of it! The rail is definitely going. It is funny how noticeable that is in the photos! What about the ginger-bready thing over the window!!

Johanne, Lily P is huge in St. Louis so I am quite familiar with it! Clothes, yes - kitchens, NO! Good idea about the glass cabinets - they definitely reveal a hodge-podge that would best be concealed! I AM making headway on the counter-top clutter, however. Unfortunately, that has resulted in more visible granite !
