How about a darker shade only on one wall. You are right to be concerned about the amount of light, but you could also solve this problem with an appropriately-sized light fixture, hung at the correct height above the table, that lit something besides the ceiling. You will also want a warmer gray, or it will come up purple against your carpet and trim.

I hadn't realized how high my light fixture looked. We recently had it installed, and I had initially wanted it to hang 30" above the table, but it was installed with the bottom edge at 36" above the table. I think that I will try lowering it a bit.
As for the carpet and trim, those are not staying! The trim will be painted white, and the carpet will eventually be changed out to wood flooring.
Another thought I have had is to install white wood paneling on the bottom half of the wall with the dark gray above. I just have a few transition dilemmas with that plan, though.

Dark blue with white wainscoting had been my initial idea for the room. Now I have been leaning towards dark gray with the white wainscoting. However, the blue photos you posted are beautiful, and you may have gotten me rethinking - of course, just after I finally found the perfect gray sample (haven't bought a gallon of paint yet, tho!)

I'm not sure you will be happy with any color without improving the overall lighting in the room. That's quite a large space for only one pendant fixture, and proper lighting will make everything, including the paint color that you choose, look better.

Oh, and dimmers are always a good idea so you can get just the light level you desire.

If you add a buffet to the room you could put lamps on it and that would take care of the lighting issue. You could do dark grey but dark blue might be nice with your cherry furniture. Add curtains with a light colour in them and artwork and your room would pop.
