We are building a farmhouse in a mountainous area and thought about green but we are using fiber cement siding, so we are painting rather than staining. And I felt that when there was that much solid green that no matter what color of green it was, it wouldn't blend into the landscape.

We also considered a taupe/gray (the color of bark) - trim the same color - with white windows. Don't know if that appeals to you at all. That approach of painting trim and walls the same color is something you see in Shaker architecture.

Also thought about barn red - again with just the windows showing white.

What we finally decided was to go with all white with a medium gray metal roof, chiefly because it just said "farmhouse" to us and we wanted the house to look as if it had been there a century or more, with rooms and porches being added over the years.

Will your house be visible from a distance? That can make a difference, I think. Our house sits in a cove, visible only as you come up the drive. We didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone else's view.

Tell us more about the siting of the house... what area of the country... surrounding landscape...high on a ridge or hidden...etc...

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes we are pretty high, hidden in summer but visible somewhat during winter from a distant highway. You approach the house from below. We also considered white because of the farmhouse look but feel it doesn't blend with the landscape. We don't have much flat area and have many large rocks or boulders that are a white-ish color. It suits a mountain craftsman home but I love the farmhouse!

I found the photos above on Houzz. The green looks pretty sweet.

But with the whitish rocks surrounding your house site, I think you could do all white if you really wanted to (think Maine coast).

One thing I have noticed when driving in our area is that the houses with "shiny" metal roofs really jump out. Even our flat painted metal roof has a little shine to it, but only when the sun is really bright.

I could talk forever about this topic... lol. Bottom line, with a farmhouse, it will be hard to go wrong.

Thanks for your input. I have been looking at the Jericho Farmhouse for a while. They never say the color but several guess its the Relentless Olive SW or close. When I looked at the color in the store I was surprised, wouldn't have guessed that. Also like the dark roof on the second house you posted. I have started thinking of just doing shingles and no metal. Had originally thought Weathered Brown, but am starting to think about more of a dark charcoal.
