I have had white suggested for the back splash as well as black, one for the white appliances the other for the black hardware. Also what colour should I use on the wall in the dinning area to the left?

Do you have photos from other angles? What colors are in your home or are you drawn to? Blue, green, yellow or red??

With white appliances, white farmhouse sink as well as flooring and cabinets that all match, I would suggest a white subway tile back splash in a brick lay style. Don't try to match a backsplash with the hardware chosen - let that work with your countertop and other accents as you pull your home together.

HI -- I think you have more to do before deciding on tiles . Your kitchen looks unfinished and visually cluttered . I recommend that you need to go to an all white kitchen. Fill in the open tops (wood or frosted glass ) of the cabinet doors and paint all the cabinets to white . The counter is fine ,unless you want to change that also.Then add new chrome handles if you think they are needed after painting .Also paint the frame around the window too. Now add glossy large format 3x6 or bigger crazed antiqued subway tiles w/small grout lines . The grout can be white or light grey . And add the tiles all the way up and around the window. There is one re-modeling thing that would make this kitchen look even better . I would re-move the cabinets over the stove and put up a chimney style range vent hood in chrome/stainless with glass , with all the tile being up on the wall to the ceiling and backing the vent . Then a cabinet or some open shelves can be added back on the left , if needed . New track lighting and task lighting to top it off . This will up- date and make this kitchen look bigger, brighter, cleaner and more modern . And not cluttered looking .

Thank you for the white subway tile ideas! The cabinets were just made by Alderwood Enterprises of Huntsville Ontario, so I will not paint them. I agree the picture above is cluttered and my kitchen is unfinished. The top of the cabinets will be filled with frosted glass and the top shelf lowered out of view. There will be under-cabinet lights and a light valance installed as well as the the kick-plates. As for colours in the rest of the house they will be changed. I like colours from nature, blue green, brown and red.

There will be posts and a beam between this room and the living room. Also we will finish installing the pot lights. The plan is to replace the large island with a butcher block table that will have cast metal legs.

It sounds like you are hoping to achieve a farmhouse style home with the farmhouse sink, post and beam as well as the butcher block island (??). That will look wonderful! Subway tile, as I suggested at first will compliment this theme. I would suggest you do the subway in a backsplash from countertop to the bottom of you top cupboards - and not all the way up around the window. I think you will like a little color in the space around the window with a lovely drapery of your choice. Also, use white grout - anything else will make the space too busy to the eye.

May I suggest placing the new island straight instead of on an angle?

The use of pot lights and under counter lighting is wonderful! You may want to consider having your light switches on dimmers. A small price to pay for the ability to change the mood of a room. I also love that you have raised your drapery rod above the door frame about 5 inches. That is great!

If you like the colors that come from nature you may consider Benjamin Moore "Guildford Green". It is a wonderful neutral tone which would work well with natural wood used in your cupboards, flooring and furniture. You could then use your other favorite colors from nature (red, brown) as accents through drapery, dishes, pillows, throws, artwork, etc.

Thank you minnie63, I live on a horse farm so yes. The new island will be movable so I will try it straight. I have the dimmer switch, just not installed yet. I love the Guildford green my living room is a few shades darker, but I will be redoing it. The drapery rod is currently a temporary as well as the curtains due to the afternoon sun, but I like the idea of adding browns and reds there.

I think white tile is going to make things continue to look disjointed...too much white every here and there, mixed with your new honey cabinets. I would mix various tones of whites/honey, etc., possibly in a ceramic crackled or glass tile. It will tie things together rather than doing distinct white or honey.

I think you should do something like a blue-grey colour for your walls. Maybe something with natural rock elements and glass for your backsplash since you have natural looking cabinets.

Okay it took me two years but I have back splash and light green sage coloured walls, thank-you all for your assistance, and look at the change in the colour of the cherry in two years, love it!
