I know but they will be in an enclosed bed where they can't escape and I have tons of host plants
milkweed, stinging nettle , bigleaf maple , willows , ligums , red currents , ( I have a whole natives garden , but need to feed the bees mid summer

what would be a good replacement for it

King County suggests a few alternatives:

"California lilac is a profusely blooming evergreen shrub that makes a nice alternative to butterfly bush. It is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant and has fragrant blue flowers that attract butterflies and honey bees. It also tolerates poor soils. Other alternatives include chaste tree for hot sunny sites and Pacific ninebark for sunny or shady areas. Additionally, Chilean potato vine, red-flowering currant, orange-ball butterfly bush and fallowiana butterfly bush make wonderful flowering additions to the garden. Best of all, they won't escape to cause problems down the road."

I will check out the lilac and orange ball
I tried to take a cutting of California lilac not knowing what it was but it did not root will try again , I planted red currents last month

As a field biologist who has done a lot of plant ecology surveys, Thank you green bean and Mickey for listening. That butterfly bush is truly terrible.
