I have a house built in 1923, with original oak trim. The dining room trim is dark brown, however the living room and hall trim has an orangey undertone that I really hate.

My option is to paint the walls a colour that will downplay the orange undertone, or else have them sanded an restained a more neutral brown.

I was reading that sanding old wood and then staining it would actually make it look worse and devalue it - does anyone have any experience with this?

Also, any advice on stain colours if I go with the sanding/staining route?
