Maybe an evergreen hedge.

Will an evergreen hedge keep the salmon berry roots from spreading? I know that's a tall order. Any suggestions for specific shrubs? This is in a place where deer are a consideration. We planted some euonymous shrubs that they enjoyed very much. :(

Aside from the salmon berries there is another fruit bearing plant whose leaves are some what maple shaped. Anyone know what it's name is?

Thimble berry.

Of the two, the thimbleberries are most likely to spread, they like shade or sun and a wide variety of soil conditions. Perhaps one of the laurels with their massive root systems would slow the wild berries down, but this will require a lot of space.

How many linear feet of shovel and cane pruning would you have to do otherwise to halt the advance of the berries?

Both Salmon and Thimble berries pull up relatively easy, except the very big ones, of course. I dig those up and then pull the remaining roots.

Garden is doing great. A few of the items we picked up from you are still chugging along. 2 items succumbed to some fungus that I was really sad to see go. The snake bark maple and styrax obasia. 15 years of planting and digging really adds up.

I have dealt with both of these wild plants. In this area I'm hoping to plant something on the border and reduce maintenance of the edge. Just last year we removed a laurel hedge that was completely out of control and was seeding everywhere. Not a fan of laurel. But with those

gone the wild edge is trying to creep in. The whole are is getting planted, but as you know that can take years to get established. This photo is from late last year and it's the area to the right that needs defending. This area fronts the road at our place.

For that short distance, a sub-soil barrier or twice-annual shovel pruning could work. Is it possible to remove several feet of wild plants, giving you a longer time-frame between attacks?

The wall doesn't actually bisect the berm, the photo is misleading and everything in front of the wall is basically flat. It looks like dirt as the removal of the laurels required machinery and that destroyed the grass. The photo also doesn't show the entire length of the area that abuts the forest. It's about 50 feet long and is off to the right and mostly out of view in the photo.
