Chomping off my basil

Today one of my basil containers had 2 of its 4 plants chomped off. A "stalk" with leaves on it was laying below on the deck. I found another "stalk" with leaves, on the ground, like something had carried it away and then left it. What would chew basil toward the base of its stems? I have had slugs and treated for them, but in the past, they always damaged leaves, not the stalks. This happened overnight, as best I can tell. I went out a few minutes ago to try and catch a culprit, but didn't see anything. The yard is fenced (6' wood) and the container is raised on the deck. Other plants nearby were ok (knocking on wood). There may be rabbits in the yard, although I haven't seen any, but deer would be highly unlikely. This is my first experience with entire plants being chewed off.

Any ideas what chomped the basil? The two at the front are the victims. A third is partially chomped toward the top.
