Bring the lines of the foundation beds out in large curves. Your plantings will look more natural and the curve of the bed will add interest to the house. Then plant dwarf shrubs along the back (viburnum, rhododendron, or loropetalum) and perennials in front (turtlehead, knockout roses, muhly grass). If you like to do a little gardening, you can put colorful annuals in front of that. A small tree would look nice on the right side of your island (dogwood, crepe myrtle, red bud).

Your rustic accents are nice but your fence could be upgraded to something with wood pickets and posts. Plant some bigger shrubs or if you like gardening perennials and annuals. Mulch dark brown.

Can you delete the pump and the milk barrel? That spot would be great for a big specimen tree, like a dogwood, or even a small cluster of birches and boulders.

Next to the house, a red, large size Japenese Maple to the left of the porch. fill in underneath with shade-tolerant shrubs like ferns and hellabores, and hostas. a couple tree ferns could shield the house, if they grow where you live.

The other side should have big shrubs like viburnum, rhodies, sambuca, maybe a non aggressive vine on a trellis. Start big in the back, and work down towards the front. You can meld the planters and the lawn by planting lots of naturalizing spring bulbs in the planters, and take them a few feet into the lawn in spaced clusters.

Think about contrasting color: There are some great blue cedars, if you want to grow conifers. I especially like the Blue Atlas Cedars, which can be propped up and trained onto a structure, or left to find their own way along the ground of a post.

I'd recommend spending a few bucks and have a local landscaper take a look, or someone from a good local nursery (no home depot) could make some good suggestions.

And don't forget to install some gentle LED uplighting, and hide the fixtures behind rocks or plants.

I would fill your wine barrel with overflowing flowers.

Take a hose and lay out a curving flowerbed around the house. When you get a shape you like mark it with spray paint.

Aim for smallish evergreens and the backbone for the flowerbed. Definitely don't plant anything that will eventually get too large.

Add a signature tree to the yard. Choose carefully!
