Yes, there is a rain screen. The siding is spaced away from the wall which is wrapped with Vaporshield that provides a breathable, waterproof siding. The horizontal siding acts as a rain screen and UV light screen. There are several homes in my area that have used this method so it is passing inspection here. I would think an architect who designs modern style homes would be familiar with this method.
