It's always difficult to judge color on-line, but I would suggest pulling a color from the fireplace tile surround. Perhaps a warm, medium dark gray. White is fine, but adding color creates interest.

Your woodwork white is my choice for your room which leans toward formal. I do suggest your hang something much taller over the fireplace, though.

Please do not paint the lovely FP surround. It looks lovely with your light wood floors.

I would suggest an off-white, or a very dark brown.

As per JudyG Designs, suggestion painting the woodwork white might look like this. You might need to change the granite to white for a clean sharp finish.

I too like the FP as is, but would add some bling to this lovely room with a bit of glass tile.

Brighter, bigger more exiting art above the FP can be as wide as the firebox opening and another foot or so taller.

mcrkms First I took the picture straightened it and lighten it in PICASA. Then I just used Windows PAINT which is on Windows XP or Windows 7. It's just a lot of cut, paste & matching colors with the 'eyedrop' tool. There are videos on YouTube that can tutor.

leelee normally I would agree with you about updating the drapes, but I imagine she may have had these custom made, and the rest of the room is from the late 80's so it fits.

Custom made (drapes) goes without saying but after nearly 30 years she's gotten her money's worth. Shewefly has expressed interest in changing some things about the room. I think when we live with something for so long it's hard to see our own space as fresh eyes would see it. So, new drapes would make a huge difference. Many places now sell standard lengths of 120 inches which might fit. Just a suggestion.

Have to convince hubby. His eyes are rolling with each update. Have new chairs ordered and painter arrives monday. I truly apprecI ate your rendering big help.

i think an area rug would solidify the space with the dark tv unit and the light walls, something needs to bring them together.
