I am moving into a house that has the gas range in the center island, yet the cabinets installed were not custom made, therefore they go up along the back wall like a fake fume hood to accommodate where most people would put their cooktop. But instead you just see more of the backsplash going higher and have the counter top running the length. Just looks odd to me...trying to find pictures to convert this eye sore into a focal point...like a coffee bar with cups hanging from back splash, or wine bar area...just not sure what to do...it just looks funny to me...any suggestions?

I have never seen anything like that. The simplest thing is to remove the valance at the bottom and add a shelf slightly higher than the bottom of the adjoining wall cabinets, since they already have molding on the bottom. The shelf doesn't have to match--it can be stainless steel or even black. Then you can add a few display items and it will look like it was supposed to be that way. You might also want to consider cutting out the panels on the cabinet doors and adding glass

The simplest thing to do would be to add a board across the bottom and make it a self,display pretty bowls on it

I agree with a shelf. If you wanted a plate rail, there are kits available for that.

Thank you!! I was thinking about that too just wondered how expensive it would be to add glass doors and afraid I might screw up left over cabinet after I removed the trim....and thoughts on expense or what damage I might create?

to add glass doors is not difficult or expensive. You will need someone to cut out the panels, and then you can take the doors to a glass place and select the type of glass you want to put in. This should only take a few days and would cost around $50 per door, depending on what type of glass you select. If you do not want to remove the bottom trim, just place the shelf a few inches underneath it--that will still look fine.

well, except there is no back to the 'cabinet', right?

it's odd. it's unusual. but i dont feel it's fatal. a great place to put your mixer, or an awesome espresso maker with all the levers and such... live with it a while and see.

How about a built in espresso machine. Miele has a great one. Then just have a cabinet maker frame it out for you.
I love the idea of a coffee bar.
