I agree. if you can't change it right away, embrace the pink! Pink, black, white, cream, green, any of those combos are in especially with black. I would consider a large white bath rug for the floor to reduce even more of the pink and to keep the room bright. Wallpaper with some white but a good balance in black. I'll post a pick for you.

Ok, had exact same problem back home, two! types of pink tile! here is what worked for me. First, and I can not emphasis this enough Behr cottage white. It has lamp black in it. and something about the mix of this paint tones down all pinks and greens, it also covers most stains so you do not have to keep repainting. I would not even try other colors before i try this, just because they look similar does not mean they are. there are many roads to ..... The other color that is great and tones down pink is dark green. I used the paint from above then used a wall paper border, I know those things were great dealing with difficult colors. Anyway, it was very elegant, just magnolia blossoms with leaves and dark green bordering. There was the tiniest touch of pink, less than 10%. It made that bathroom so impressive that even my mom who is a stark white person did not take it down when she sold it.

And, believe I love a lot of the wall paper, but have removed it oh so many times. I would wallpaper boards and stick those on the walls if you wallpaper. Cause once you do it, well even though it often peels, it never comes off cleanly and can take ages of hard work to remove.

Go to gbmglass.com to check out the tiles. There are numerous tiles that are just for bathroom use. A couple of the great tile lines that would look great in there are Galaxy, Landscape and 4D Cube. There are very affordable and can give you a great new look that you would love.

This is a total stroke of luck! I agree with the suggestions for greys or even the light turquoise. Play to the simplicity of the era of the bathroom to do it justice. Chalk ware on the walls (think fish and mermaids) if you can find it. Small metal open shelves from that era are easy to find at flea markets and look timeless when hung on an open space. Curtains with some color or a flowery pattern would suit it nicely too.

I don't think you can combine 50's pink tile bathrooms with modern rustic. Just too different- colors and styles not compatible. You may need to rethink your wishes and carefully read what some posters have offered. Sometimes you need to let go of a thought and open yourself to a different idea. :)

Found the photo below - they labeled it as modern rustic. It will be a fun challenge to achieve the look you want. The right colors in all you do will be critical to make it work. Is the pink in your bathroom intense like the first photo, or more subdued like the last?

ah, soot it is then, cause i have to go with diane, my thought was to downplay and bring in a larger color pallet, this is way out of my wheel house. Have fun you two, let us see when you are done, ought to be fascinating. One last silly question, only because i have seen it before, is your husband's love of the pink a subtle protest because he does not get your vision?

We had a similar bathroom in our home thirty years ago. Before pink was retro and cool. Plus spaceship/ starburst tiles scattered around.

However, the tile was flawless, and the tub and toilet, too, so we kept them. I found a wallpaper with a subtle stripe in the pink, plus grey and beige, in a textured pale geometric pattern on a white background. My father-in-law made it his mission to find replacement tiles for the spaceships, and we painstakingly drilled and chipped them out and replaced them with new/old stock. We painted the celing, replaced the window, and my daughter loved that bathroom. We did replace the sink and countertop with white. Kept the tub as it matched the tile surround, and the toilet.

It turned out great.Wish I had photos to show you, but if at least one of you loves the tile, and it's in great shape, I'd say, try to work with it. Especially if the rest of the home is still mid-mod.

Actually, your tub looks just like our old one. Circa 1953. The faucet was still perfect. They really built stuff well then.

Perhaps reface the cabinets in a more rustic wood and frame out the mirror in it.

Omg, I have this same bathroom!!! I even have the very same vanity and sink with the pink tile counter! Can't believe it:)) I painted mine a chocolate brown. I do have white tile on the floor though which helps. Put in a new mirror with a large beveled mirror frame and a glam light fixture. A large picture of a flamingo of all things but it just seemed to go! I do intend to change the vanity in the future, hate the tile counter but I love the pink tile. Wish I had a pic but I'm out of town. Good luck!

I personally think introducing black and white is the way to go. My first house had a black and white tiled bathroom and I used pink, rose and gray colored accessories to help it along...loved the look.

Ancient Art Stone, I do plan on painting the vanity cabinets. Originally i thought a white color but after Sootsprite's pics and suggestions on rustic green or wood color that is a better choice i think!

I think you completely understand my vision cause your on the right path, I'm definitely going to steal ideas from the pics...the chandelier, textured linen, reface the cabinets...taking visual and mental notes! thanks!! Carol Valdez O'Brian, I would love to put a nice white bathrug on the floor if they made them to reflect dirt, but I did the white rug and since its white and we use the bathroom daily--it didnt hold up too good. But thanks for your input!

I love the pink! I also just moved into a mid century home, but I am dealing with the previous owners attempts at updating, circa 1993. I would much prefer the original pink. ;) I would totally add in grey on the walls, and maybe even carry it up onto the ceiling. One paint colour will help the space feel larger. If a new vanity is in the budget, distressed grey stain in how I would go, and def a glam light fixture and wall decor.

I can't see keeping a bathroom that doesn't fit with the rest of you home. I assume you are not doing your home in a retro vibe......................reglaze the tile, sink, counters & tub.

Glazing sounds great if it doesn't fit your decor. I'm not sure of the cost and how long the glaze will last with regular use.
