I agree that mirror should be over console. Add 2 buffet lamps of 2 tall vases with flower stems would be nice also. In keeping with the elegance of the room, look at some panels instead of art.

Love these ideas! It's funny because we were all set to move the mirror over to the buffet as well but only one person recommended keeping it where it is because of how it reflects the chandelier light, which I do like. We still may consider moving the mirror but I think it depends what we find artwork/ panel wise. We are not too into artwork so I like the panel suggestion. I agree with doing an oriental rug to give it more color and style. I was thinking of a seagrass rug but concerned it would start to look too one palette and texture since it may match with the walls. Thanks for feedback and positive comments. Such a beautiful room. The mirror will reflect the chandelier if over the buffet. And sea grass will be perfect in texture and color. Your table looks to be a 60" round so a 10x10 would work.

I think you room desperately needs color. one of the easiest ways to do so would be to add curtains. I would take down the mirror and put curtains in that gap. similar to this http://sainteriordesignstoronto.com/arcadia-house.html that way you'll have an illusion of much bigger window.

the room is neutral and elegant. A wonderful beginning to an extraordinary look. Colorful art is needed to prevent the look from becoming ordinary. I suggest some sort of sculpture on the table...... check out the art web sites looking at glass or wood or even a large antique Chinese bowl. Go to galleries in your area and see their offerings. for example a Thai mask or even an odd piece of driftwood. If there is an local school of art and design, they may offer a rental program for art pieces, which you can rent for a time, then change out when it suits you. A rug makes it harder for the diners to slide their chairs to and from the table, so I usually avoid a rug in the dining room. The buffet console does not fit the style/elegance of the rest of the room. Please investigate some unusual choices such as a Chinese altar table or a sizable painted piece. Place a large painting over the piece of furniture, something modern, exciting, not a bucolic landscape or sea scape. Please avoid a mirror above the existing console/buffet with 2 lamps and a silver bowl of mercury balls. Your room is just a hair away from being either spectacular or sliding off into furniture store boredom. Your instincts are excellent or you could not have come this far. So indulge your eye for flair and make this a room that draws people in, where you want to sit with a friend or 2 and enjoy a drink or have a snack or share some reading material. I can envision a book club trading their books. Children coloring. letter or journal writing. After all that, you could even consider brilliant emerald or magenta taffeta drapes....

There are lots of beautiful artificial arrangements that look very natural that would be perfectly acceptable as centerpieces on your table. Having fresh flowers on the table for a dinner party is a foregone conclusion, but for everyday décor it is not an option for most of us. You want your table to look fresh and beautiful even when there is no one seated there. IMO, find a beautiful "fake" floral arrangement and enjoy the look. (keep it fresh and dusted:>)

As far as size, it should be as large as your chandelier, so find what you like and find some crystal or colored glass to add. The green and white is a nice idea and then use your accent color in the glass similar to above photo.

I used Pier 1"s Shimmer Trees art in bronze to decorate my niece's similar dining room. It is neutral, but has texture and a little shimmer. Very pretty in a room like this. It comes in 60 by 50, so it might be considered for above the buffet.

The mirror is way too large for the spot it's in. It's frame is too big and heavy looking. Find another mirror for that spot. Taller, thinner and more refined.

Either move the mirror over the buffet or relocate it to another room. The current wall is too small for the framed mirror. Normally, if the mirror was placed over the buffet I would recommend buffet lamps to finish the setting, but because you already have sconces mounted on the walls, a buffet lamp is not really required. If you decide you'd prefer artwork, then make sure it extends across about 75% of the buffet.

There have been some unusual rug sizes posted here. You rug size is the combination of the room size and the size of your table. Obviously the buffet should NOT be on the rug, so it's logical that there be an approx 18" border of wood showing around the edge of your room. If you need additional assistance please let us know. If you want the room to be visually expansive, consider a rug without a border.

Why don't you just try the mirror over the buffet? That would clear up one issue for you!

Think about what you like: a Chinese bowl, silver candlesticks, murano glass urns, artifacts, mercury glass votives...the sky is the limit. These are the things that go on a table or buffet. You need a large mirror or artwork over the buffet. Lamps are always nice on a buffet too but can get in the way if you need a lot of space to lay things out. First think about what you need and then buy the prettiest things that will be useful to you.

Lovely room! IMO, two of these clement vases, one on either side of your mirror above your buffet, wood look lovely.

And kroftygal I love your colors. A few pops of color would be nice but the serenity of your room is wonderful. The colors and the elegant chandelier set a sophisticated tone, so no need to add lots of colors. If you add a painting , a carpet and a bowl ( either colored or filled with color) you will have enough. Remember when it is filled with friends and family they will also add colors to the room. :)

I love the elegance of the room. Just see how the mirror looks over the buffet and post a photo. Replace the blinds with long drapes in neutral color (with a little bit of shimmer?) for some softness. For every day find a unique art object for the table, perhaps with a metallic shimmer, but of course for entertaining it will be a beautiful floral arrangement that coordinates with your table setting. I look forward to photos!

I would go back to your initial post on this subject last November. One of your inspiration rooms is a beautiful neutral palette with a cool, modern chandelier and gorgeous aqua silk custom window coverings. They would be spectacular in your room. Instead of focusing on the small stuff, I would finish your key pieces such as window coverings, perhaps a textural, neutral rug, bound with a dark linen border and a fabulous piece of art.
These key pieces will elevate your room and make it a special place for formal dinner parties or family get togethers.
Art is personal. Go to galleries, art shows see what speaks to you. I suggest you don't get a matching piece of art. Art should stand on it's own.

Sorry, one more thing, the mirror is the wrong scale for the wall it is on.

Wow, thank you for all the fabulous input! There are a few takeaways I have from this post:

1) Move the mirror over the buffet and add runner on buffet. Add something on buffet that is not a lamp on either ends. I agree that it may conflict with the sconces on the other wall to put lamps there. I think moving the mirror and adding a runner will be a good start. I also think maybe adding dishes or some items below, in the buffet will help add some "finish".

2) I like the idea of a shimmery drapes on the windows to replace the mirror and add different textures to the room.

3) Once we move the mirror and add the drapes, we will see if a rug is needed. Maybe the drapes will give it enough color and warmth that is currently missing.

3) I agree that this room has potential to be a lovely room or turn into a staged blah room so I am going to really take your advice to heart and take my time on each piece so we do it right and it is fabulous!

In the meantime I will keep my eyes open for unique art pieces that may work for buffet or centerpiece. Thank you again!

Love the arrangement and colors, but a little too small for a 72" table. I would visit a florist and see about a custom piece. I had a beautiful Fitz and Floyd swan that I took to a florist and he made me a gorgeous "fake" centerpiece. It was a little pricey, but was perfect and I used it for 10 years.

I agree the centerpiece is a bit too small. I see that no one has recommended a round rug. I would mimic that shape with your table and chandelier. Go big and no runner, just another thought. Good luck, you had great advice from everyone.

I second snowbird's recommendations. If you go with an oriental rug you might consider a large ceramic bowl that picks up on one of the colors (persimmon & white perhaps) even sitting it stop a lazy Susan that matches the table. You have a beautiful space, especially like the wall treatment.

So many great suggestions. I always love to leave my clients with a formal dining room that has place settings. It depends on how often you are using this space, but setting the table and doing a nice centerpiece gives context to the room. Even if you aren't using it that often, you will have a nice finished look that will relax you and look put together to any of your guests. Hang something on that wall, find a centerpiece that you love, go for the rug, all great suggestions. Just set that table, and good luck!

So..we moved the mirror over the buffet and discovered some art a friend of my husband's made for him as a present fits perfectly. We never quite knew where to hang it but it's unique, special to us, colorful and has a nice story behind it. Let me know what you think.

Will continue looking for centerpieces based on your advice. I am not opposed to a round rug. I think it will just depend what fits. I think a rug will probably be our last piece since the room can function and feels okay without it. But will consider all options; square and round. We have no china or anything to set the table with so that is another thing we would have to buy. I was looking at some gold charges to start it off with as I don't think placemats fit that well on a round table…it's coming together!

WooHoo!!! The mirror looks like it was made for the space, as does the art. Try local auctions for fine china; you can often find beautiful sets at a very reasonable price. Also, since your table is 72 inches in diameter, a rug that is 9 or 10 feet round or square will be the correct size. You should allow at least 18 inches of flooring to border your rug. (You may need a rug for the acoustics of the room, as there are a lot of hard surfaces in it.) Take a bow!

The mirror and the art look great! Please don't display place settings when you are not using the table. That looks so staged and pretentious in my opinion.

Do you really need a rug. I would invest in draperies and call it a day.

If you don't want to do real flowers, think about a trip to your nearest wholesale flower mart. Don't know what part of the county you're in, but SF has a fabulous mart, great for fresh flowers, orchids and dried and organic decor.
They have beautiful boxwood baskets that my whole bridge group have purchased. They look great as a centerpiece, filled with ferns or orchids and other greenery. You can change out the plants for holidays. I love boxwood and moss balls as well and moss runners. Very organic and beautiful.
Last Christmas every house tour I went to used lots of moss and natural elements. Then there's always succulents.
I think because of our severe draught, succulents are very popular.
I love them and they are easy to grow!
You could get a big beautiful ceramic bowl and fill with succulents.

J9, this thread is 2 years old but I saw your question. 72" would work but might be a bit tight if you add 2 feet to pull out a chair and another 2 feet or so behind each chair for walking. Your best bet is to make a template or tape out 72" on your floor and add a few chairs to see how it would feel.
