The Science Behind Dill's Growth

I've never grown Dill before and I am fascinated by how it grows. Below is a picture of the Dill "splitting" itself. Sometimes it splits and flowers shoot out, and sometimes more growth. Is anyone familiar with how the inside of the plant works? Just curious...

That stem is a flower stem. Dill is an annual which bolts fast and the elongated 'splitting' stems are a sign it is happening. All the 'split' stems will flower in due course.

When my dill plants are stressed by heat and drought, the flowering process occurs much faster. I find that dill is difficult to grow during the heat of the summer.
