14/3 wiring

Hope I can describe this properly. I have 14/3 wiring running from a ceiling light fixture. The black hot runs thru three light fixtures to a switch at the other end of the basement. It is not connected to any of the fixtures. The red (switched hot) comes back from the switch and is pigtailed to each fixture as it returns to the first light. I want to remove this first light from the switch, so here's my question. Do I simply remove the red hot from the fixture, in which case I have a hot wire that I will cap off? OR, would it be better for me to end this switched hot at the next light (the second light) fixture. It would be connected directly to the fixture and not pigtailed. I would cap the red that continues just to keep it from contacting anything. That would end the hot return to this first fixture. Any preference? Do I have this figured out?
