You could ditch the bed and replace it with an upholstered one with a higher headboard. Get the kind that has both headboard and footboard because then you won't need a dust skirt on the bed. A light colored leather would look good with blue/green walls. Z Gallerie is a good source. If you can do without one of the storage chests, I would shed no tears at its loss. If you can't part with one of the chests, then change the night stands. Or perhaps you could paint either the night stands or one of the chests.

Consider hardwood flooring in the bedroom with a 9 x 12 rug under the bed. The rug doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Stickley furniture is very expensive. I'm sure that you could sell the bed and the nightstands without a problem. That would add to your decorating budget. ;) I would not paint the chests, as it will destroy the value of the furniture. I like the idea of a linen or seagrass headboard. Carolyn's idea of hardwood floors is a good one, if you'd like them. Of course, it would depend on what is covering the other floors in your house. If you go the hardwood route, a seagrass rug would further the look you are going for. Since there is a red undertone in the cherry furniture, I would use a pale green paint. Sherwin Williams has a whole range of Coastal Living colors that would fill the bill. You could get whitewashed nightstands and darker green glass lamps with white shades. Some new artwork-- seascapes and/or beach scenes would be appropriate. Good luck!

Although I like the pictures next to the bed--the tops of the pictures would look better if they didn't line up with the top of the headboard.

Sell the bed, chest and nightstands. Invest in new headboard and bed linens and nightstands. New lamps also. Then paint.

I can see that after 10 years it might be time for a change. The bed should be the vocal point of the room, so perhaps start there with some beautiful bedding. If that doesn't improve the bed set, then go for a new headboard and end tables. I think of all the rooms in your home, your bedroom is the most personal and you can decorate it for just you. A new chandelier in the room would be great also. Make it your space. If you want calm, coastal and contemporary, grey paint is not doing it. Nor are the current wood pieces.

The furniture is chunky for your space. But you can get big bucks for Stickley. There are so many arts and crafts collectors with homes that can use them to their full potential. Wait for the right buyer. Seriously, it may never have been your style but there are those who love it. Then you can start over.

Forgot to ask where you live. If craftsman or arts and crafts is popular there, you will have a captive audience.

A larger, upholstered headboard would bring better scale and more softness to the master bedroom.
Select the largest bedside tables that fit the space. Opt for narrow mirrors behind new lamps - this will double your light in the room.
Add a large, comfortable reading chair at your lovely corner double window niche, a floor lamp and small table for book and cup.
Try for a larger scale piece to hold your tv....perhaps an armoire that can close off the tv until you use it.
Also try for a larger scale piece to replace the other chest.
Remove the two pieces of art on the entrance wall and leave it blank.
It's a personal choice, but I would opt for the feel of wall to wall carpet under foot in a bedroom.
Lastly, with a new, larger headboard and better scale bedside tables, I would not put art of any sort on that wall. The two vents need less attention.

Certainly don't know why you've been stymied for 10 years with such lovely classic furniture. You are lucky to have a husband with such good taste. As lovely as upholstered headboards are they are traps for dust, etc. I agree with Beverly work with furniture (read you already put it on craigslist).

At least your nightstands matched the headboard. If you get a new headboard, what finish will you require for the nightstands. Don't jump the gun and regret.

I still don't think you need to sell off your furniture, maybe keep the headboard and take away the foot board which must make the room appear smaller.

totally agree with Carolyn Albert-Kincl recommendation to paint vents same color as wall. Wish more people did that.

I agree with a couple other comments about changing the placement of the art and utilizing some of that space above the bed for a bigger statement piece. Something like one of these two:

I would keep the bed and nightstands and chest. Sell the dresser and get an armoire to compliment the Stickey to put the TV in and go with arts & crafts style lamps and light fixtures with primary colors in them. Your room would be beautiful painted a shade of green with that furniture. Very calm and serene. And definitely new bedding and drapery panels in a solid silk. Don't sell it. Just get things right in the room for it.

Chris, there are so many cool lamps / try at least one before you change anything. For example this is natural, repeating your wood/bamboo shades, and strength of furniture.

Sometimes people who like Stickley furniture can overdo it, which is what Chris' husband seems to have done. Too much of one style can be boring, just like Chris says in the subject line of this dilemma. One of my sons loves Stickley and his wife and I have no keep reminding him that one can have too much of it.

My current bed is 65" tall. the S&L bed is 75"tall, with rails and low footboard. Then I can put a bench with fabric at the end of the bed. I'm looking at fabrics that I love to make some bedding "splash". Probably going to painted lacquer side tables, like those from Wisteria that look like the more expensive Bungalow 5

may be able to make my current paint color work, and will go soft grey or cream carpet. You've all been big help getting me "unstuck". I may actually store the bed for another day--perhaps my son will want some day!

I hope it goes well... you obviously want to spend on lightening up the look, but nothing wrong with what you had.

I like both the bed and the night stands, but the bed is much more traditional in its lines than the very clean lined night stands. You might want to consider a bed with straighter lines which would work better with the night stands.

Be aware that by selecting this bed, the high point of the headboard will not be centered to match the high point on the wall.
