last modified: 10 years ago

I am trying my first go with patterns and colour. The artwork is a main piece in our living room. Sofa and Chairs in off-White. Thought maybe the two lumbar ones on the white chairs. Still need help with the balance of the cushions for the sofa. No area carpets yet......Terrified to go there. Paint in neutral BM Storm. Again, very eclectic .......fun look.....Sorry the living room pic isn't great. trying to post another one. Thanks anyone, for your help. *Note - although the rooms look dark, we have 32" of living room floor to ceiling windows. So have to close the blinds to take pics......sorry..

I have looked at so many rugs, and in Canada, our choices aren't nearly as great, although I have had some wonderful suggestions from another on Houzz. Patterns scare me........:)

I'm an artist and home stager. l know this suggestion is about month old, but any time you're looking to grasp ideas for your room, you should pick the strongest color from your painting. Use this color to pick your furniture, pillows, area rug etc. In this case your strongest color in your painting is cerulean blue. Nice painting but has so many colors in it, that when you try decorating around it, the room spins. Hopefully you have a neutral colored sofa, if you wanna have fun with choosing pillow designs. Is this art by the artist Robert Wyland?

Yes, it is a Wyland, and it's beautiful. The only wall it would fit on in this new space, and the room is a work in progress. These pics were just after painting complete. Now the kitchen is finished. Will progress on to the area carpets, and decide which furniture stays and what goes. @terrencehowell

I think I could probably do Cerulean blue as an accent....everything is pretty neutral. What other colour would go with that. Nix all the pillows I posted in the early stages.

You maybe can try a butter yellow, sea foam light blue, or a aqua green. Pull all the strong colors outta the painting you choose. Anytime you wanna decorate any room , always draw the strongest color outta your room painting. Make sure the painting compliments your wall colors. Sometimes people go wrong when they try to use every color in the painting or area rug. Then the room looks like a painting by the artist Jackson Pollack. I hope this helps.

Terrence Howell- next time I'm putting a room together I'll think of your Jackson Pollack comment and laugh. Hopefully I'll avoid that look!

Agreeing with THowell - but consider using color to create focus and to move the eye around the room. Your picture walls could be a focus. Choose a back ground paint color (intense to subtle) from the curated artwork wall that would enhance the curated art statement, The rug color(s) would repeat the thematic color, &/or textures to draw the eye further around the room. Consider the shape/rhythm/textures of the artwork in your pillow choices. Remember- a subtle visual/color in the rug will minimize the appearance of traffic/wear.
