Spooktacular Halloween Swap

last modified: 10 years ago

Halloween will be here before we know
it! Us GardenWebbers/Houzzers might be too old to go trick or
treating, but what could be more of a treat to a gardener than a big
bag of seeds!

RULES:

Qualifying plants come in two
catagories:

  1. Any plant with a Halloween themed
name. Here are a few examples: “Ghost” Pepper, “Goblin”
Gaillardia, “Witch” Hazel, “Blood”root etc. You'd be
    surprised how many there are!
  2. Halloween colors: orange, black, and purple. Anything with orange, black or purple fruit, flower, or foliage. Examples include: Amana Orange tomato (orange fruit), black hollyhock (black flower), Towering Orange cosmos (orange flower), Black Pearl pepper (black foliage and fruit), Rustic Orange coleus (orange foliage), etc.

Send in however many packs you'd like,
maximum of 100. Whatever you send in will be the minimum amount that
I return to you. Only three packs of the same type of seeds are
allowed. Minimum of 15 seeds per pack. Please put your username or
initials on your packs.

No seeds older than 2014. Please be
sure that all packs are marked with a date.

Use a bubble mailer, as this is what I
will use to return your new seeds. Include a return label with your
address on it, as well as the postage it cost you to send, plus one
additional stamp. This will help account for potential differences in
weight/bulk, bonus seeds, prizes, etc. If you send cash, I will ship
your pack first class and supply you with a tracking number – this
is my preferred method. First class shipping also results in less
USPS SNAFUs.

If you have a preference as to what you
get back, include a note with your seeds. Please no more than five
items on your request list. It can be specific, ie “roses,” or
general, ie “I prefer edibles.” I will do what I can to fulfill
your requests.

When I have all of the seeds, I will
divide them up to send back to you. Any additional seeds welcome.

Deadline to get seeds to me is Oct
21st. I will get your new seeds out no later than Oct
27th. This will give the post office five days to get
your packets to you, so that you receive them by Halloween.

Please respond here if you are
interested. Remember the more unusual or rare, the better!

Send seeds to:

Wishing you all a spooktacular
Halloween!

Erica, these seeds would be Spooktacular! I know they will be Booooootiful!

    Bog Sage

    Carthusian Dianthus

    Gulf Coast Penstemon

    Woodland Tobacco Fragrant Tobacco

It's starting to really feel like fall here. Trees are turning orange, yellow, peach, and red. I bought a Ginko tree that is banana yellow. It's planted close to the Legacy Sugar Maple that gets bright orange.

I meant to say 'Fragrant Cloud'.

Mary -- I got your seeds packed up. The Bog Sage has been marked as "out" on my list for several months, however I was able to to scrounge up enough seeds to make a pack for you. These are literally JUST off the plant, so I am packing them with some rice, as I am unsure they are completely dry. I'd suggest either planting them as soon as you receive them, or taking them out of the bag to let them completely dry.

Reminder -- Seed packs are due Wed 21st. If you haven't mailed yet, you need to get them in the mail by Monday.

Erica, The pineapple sage that you sent me this Summer is blooming and it is Beautiful!

Amy -- That is one of my favorites. I've had mine for years. It's right outside my kitchen window and I always see hummingbirds visiting it. I'm so glad that yours is doing well!

Erica, somehow I missed seeing that your Bog Sage was out. I'll spread the seeds out to dry when they arrive.

Amy -- Your requests are now packed up.

Mary -- Sounds good. Bog sage is truly a beautiful plant, but unlike other salvias, it produces few seeds. Please note that it sends out runners, much like mint, so be sure you plant it in a place where you're ok with it trying to take over the world, or plant it in a pot, to keep it from spreading.

    Thank you Erica!

3 packs arrived today: Amy, Heidi, Shannon.

Erica, thanks for letting me know that the Bog Sage spreads. My peppermint and lemon balm do the same. I have some places where it can 'roam at will.' I bet the White Horehound is a vigorous grower too.

Mary - I wild crafted the white horehound. It looks like it might spread a little, via seed, but does not appear to be invasive.

Erica- Just letting you know my seeds are in the mail today. My internet works one day and doesnt the next day anywhere from one hour to five or six hours.

Dawn - Ouch! Crappy internet connections are the worst! I'll keep a look out for your seeds and let you know when they arrive.

Erica-is bursztun amber & new big dwarf tomato two separate seeds?

Yeah, two separate plants. They are both dwarfs/container tomatoes. When saving seeds I accidentally mixed the two together. That's the only reason I'm offering them as a mix.

Erica- that's great. I will take them for my 1 point in game .

    Dawn -- You got it!

Erica --- would it be possible to swap out the Bellflower Campanula seeds for your lemon cucumber seeds instead? Sorry for the inconvenience, I thought they were a different variety.

Sandra -- Sure. I'll take care of it when I get home this afternoon.

Have to share a funny story about lemon cucumbers. This year I started way too many plants so gave lots away. Ethel, an 80 yr. old family friend who loves to garden took a lemon cucumber plant since she had never tasted them before. Later in the summer she told me that she didn't care for the lemon cucumbers. I said, "Really? They're my brother-in-law's favorite." Last week I called to thank her for some nice big pears from her tree, and she said that the strangest thing had happened. "A large green gourd is growing on the lemon cucumber plant!" I didn't see how that was biologically possible. Then she said that the lemon cucumbers had developed "little bumps." Then it dawned on me. I said, "Ethel, you were eating little gourds, not cucumbers!" We both started to laugh until our sides ached. It turned out that I had the wrong tag in the pot that I gave her, getting it mixed up with the ornamental gourd mix. She had eaten 6 of them, and sent some cut up in a salad to her son, who said he didn't care for them either. Our son found out from a man at church that Ethel had given him some too. At least she had a good sense of humor over the whole thing.

Sandra -- I'm home now. Made the seed swap you requested. Also, your package arrived today!

Mary -- That's hilarious! I can't even imagine confusing the two, but yeah, those ornamental gourds must have made terrible cucumbers. =P

Darrin -- Don't forget that you get to pick 2 packs of seeds from my trade list. I need to know what you choose by tomorrow.

Mary -- I just started my garden this year and I almost always get my plants mixed up when they're young (luckily I've made a ton of plant tags :)).

Erica -- Thanks for letting me know. I didn't have much that fit the halloween theme so it's a small package, but I'm super excited to receive my swap package!

Sandra -- Don't worry about not having a lot right now. After my first year I ended up with a ton of saved seeds. I was a seed saving fool! Round Robin swaps, like this, are a great way to exchange the seeds you have saved a lot of, for chances at new things. I do have to say that you did an excellent job with the packaging. I love that you have included pictures and planting instructions on all your packs.

Erica -- Yay, I'm glad I did a good job. I signed up for a newbie pack when I first joined the forums, and saw how others packaged their seeds. I really liked the ones that came with pictures and a few instructions so I decided to mimic them. I've always been interested in gardening, but school and moving always made it difficult. Now that I have some time and space this year, I've been scouring seed catalogues, gardening forums, and my favorite... raiding my mom's garden for seeds (but a lot of the flower seeds aren't quite ready yet :( I've been eyeing a bunch of seed pods for what feels like forever).

So, I started going through the packs today. We have one member whose seeds are donations (she doesn't want anything back). Looks like she sent quite a few packs, so everyone can expect some bonus seeds in their return pack. I'll leave it up to her, rather or not she wants to reveal her identity. It is Halloween after all! You never know who's hiding under the mask! But either way, a huge thank you, for that very generous donation!

Erica, here are my seed picks from your list:

Strawberry, Yellow Wonder (2015 G, OP) (25 SPP)

Carrot, Lunar White (~50 SPP) (2015 G, OP)

Have you received my package of seeds yet?

Darrin -- Thanks for the requests. I haven't received your pack yet. Today's mail should be here within the next hour. If it arrives, I will let you know.

Darrin -- Your pack has arrived!
