Do laminate counters in a light color with a light colored backslash.

If you are keeping the black appliances you could do a black granite with a white or cream colored backsplash to keep the area light and inviting.

We would suggest an earthy toned granite with greens and browns and creams. This would create interest, texture and color. Then we would add a light backsplash tile in the creamy tones from the granite to provide a light backsplash and more contrast to the granite and cabinets.
