HELP with master bedroom.

Today is our 33rd Anniversary, I want to redecorate our bedroom and it needs some major decorating help. It measures 25' x 10' it has radiant heating up against the windows. The paneling is like a compressed particle board, that's original to the home that was built in 1968 , I'm not sure if it is even paintable. We plan to move in a couple years so I don't want to invest a lot of money into this room. The ceiling is wood, and I definitely do not want to paint it . The bookshelves I love but I've always had difficulty decorating them, there are six drawers underneath them. We thought about making a padded headboard. Sometimes it's just overwhelming to decide what we should do first. My husband and I are both DIYs, but we need some motivation, hope you can help with some ideas.

Try a white upholstered headboard, pick fabric to coordinate with new or existing bedding.

I really like your curtains. You need to lower them to just above the floor. Do you like the colors in the curtains? If so that could be a good starting point. You can definitely paint the walls and it will be a huge improvement.

Do you plan on keeping your furniture or up for buying new? You may want to consider painting your night stands if new furniture isn't in the budget.

Lights on, I closed curtains. Problem having drapes closer to floor is that is where the radiant heat registers are located. New bedding or lighting fixtures would not be a problem to get but I just need some ideas.

I really don't want to buy new furniture because we're going to move in a couple years and we will get something new then. Painting may be a good idea though.

I would look into painting the walls (and the bookcase and the brown shelving fronts) a light color, which will really make the biggest impact. I would place the bed on the far wall - looks much nicer when you see your headboard and bedding/pillows, etc) and suggest removing the recliner & table and add a small chaise on an angle for a more modern and still comfy seating - which can be used in another home when you move (living room or den for example). Your drapes and blinds are nice, but should lower the hem or the rod, so curtains just reach the floor. Edit your bookcase (look at pictures on Houzz for ideas). Lighting and lamps could be updated as well as art. Purchase new bedding/layer based on your drapery and you could make an upholstered headboard. Brown, cream and blue would be really complimentary colors. I would start with the bedding choice and then the headboard/color decision, then select the paint and the appropriate accessories. Paint the walls something like SW Kilim Beige. It will make a huge difference!! You can then get some new bedding in order to get a fresh look.

Good photos, thanks. Consider replacing the hanging lamp with a drum type lamp - it will be a good update for selling, too. Try http://www.designerliving.com for new bedding. Or shop at a bricks and mortar Macy's or JC Penney. New bed pillows, too.

I would do a roman shade for the window since you're a diy'er. You could even use your curtains for the material. They're just not going to work at that height. Is new bedding in the plans. I think you should start with that and then pick your paint. I think green accents with creamy white walls would be really pretty in your room with the wood ceilings and the windows. You have such a big room so start on one side and work your way over.

Here's my favorite way of doing the bed. White or cream sheets and coverlet. Quilt or duvet folded at the end of bed. Matching shams mixed with other pillows.
