I would try planting deeply against a south-facing wall or overwintering in pots under cover. Other than that my only experience is planting in the ground and having slugs eat off the new growth as soon as it started. In fact as I remember it the pests went down into the ground to get at this apparent delicacy. This occurrence made me think this was why I have seen these bulbs offered at outlets here for decades but absolutely never see the growing plants on local properties.

Same thing with tuberoses.

Thank you, Embothrium, for your response. I did notice that slugs love these. First leaves that emerged got shredded so after that I tried to stay on top of with with slug bait. I will try to overwinter burying pots like you suggested. I assume it is important to keep these dry to prevent rot. And if they die that's OK too. They are gorgeous but I shouldn't have bought them in a first place. It's too high of a maintenance for the Winter.
