Try Z Line, available thru Amazon. We encased their chimney style hood in a wood box and vented it outside. Works great, not too noisy (but not silent either.) We were very pleased with the price (found ours locally as a scratch n dent so it was even less, but Amazon ' s price is still within your budget.)

Performance. Aesthetics. Value. Pick two. You aren't getting all three. You've picked Value. So your other choice is likely to be that actual (not fake doctored number) CFM requirement, which means a plain Broan under cabinet hood that you can get at any box store.

Yes I know I will not be getting a tremendous performance out of a $400 chimney style. The issue with an UC vent is that we have no cabinets in the kitchen. It would look silly to add one lone cabinet. We already decided on chimney. She does a ton of cooking and there had never been any vent and that needs to change ASAP.

This one has good reviews, 600 CFM, and is 400.00. There are others.

Broan has the worst stats (CFM + sones) of all the hoods that I have been looking at for the last year, and it's not even the cheapest. It may be that most sound like jet engines regardless of stats; I don't know. There certainly are a lot of hoods out there in all price ranges. Be sure to check out the vent requirements - size, shape and location (top, rear). That alone may narrow your choice. The Costco suggestion is good. Try Zephyr, too, not its website which lists only the really pricey ones. Best Buy (Pacific Sales) , Lowes, ABT online, carry the less expensive but still well rated. The less expensive Zephyrs have names like Tornado and Typhoon.

Check Overstock...we bought our 900 CFM Cavaliere chimney style hood on overstock...it was more than $400 but not outrageously more.

My local appliance store has this one new on a steep discount for $280. Then I need the eternal blower for $220 so it would be around $500 total.

Should I grab it?
