Good move to not get an ornamental pear! They self-destruct if there is heavy snow or ice, so not a wise choice for New England.

Before giving suggestions, we need to know more about your setting. Is it full sun, part sun, mostly shade or deep shade? What is your location and zone? Is there a width limit, and if the height is a bit over 25 feet, will that be an issue?

If you want to add your location and zone to your profile so it shows up in all your GW posts:

Go to Your Houzz in upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone.

If you add info on your state or the nearest large city you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures.

Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing.

What is your zone? Are there a lot of Eastern Red Cedar growing near you? (They spread cedar apple rust,).

Most small flowering trees produce fruit. (Including Bradford pear.) Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is one of the few exceptions. Magnolia has very impressive flowers and no fruit. If you are OK with tiny berries, there is hawthorn and Alleghany Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis).

how about a yellow magnolia, just to stand out in the crowd?
