Our home is a restored late 1800s carriage house. It has loads of charm and plenty of quirks to work with, including the windows on the first floor which are not consistent. I don't have pictures so I'll try to describe the rooms as best I can.

When you enter the house, you enter into the living/family room. The first floor has 10-ft ceilings and a 500 square foot living room. There are 4 windows in that room. Two of the windows are to the left of the door, right next to each other and look out onto the front porch. The other 2 windows are on one side of the room, within built-in bookshelves, divided into sets of three (built-in, window,built in, etc.). Connecting the three built-ins is one long shelf that rests right above the window trim.

To the right of the front door is the dining room, just a curved double archway (there is no entry hall to divide the rooms but it's clearly it's own room). That room has 2 single, 36 inch windows, each one on a different wall.

I can't decide what to do for window treatments. For the living room I wanted to hang sheer curtains 4-6 inches above the window trim. That easily would work on the windows facing the front of the house. It does not work for the windows within the built-in book shelves. We currently have blinds on all windows but I don't love them. I've also considered shutters but I'm not sure that I want to spend that much money as we plan to sell the house in a couple of years and we've already invested some money into other areas of the home that needed the update more.

Can I hang the curtains in the living room at different heights? Treat them differently? Should I treat the windows in the dining room differently because they are a completely different size and the room differentiation is clear?
