I'm not superstitious at all! While I do believe that there is stuff that we can't explain, superstition is more like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe that a black cat, or walking under a ladder, or breaking a mirror will give you bad luck, you create that bad luck! You're so busy looking out for things that are negative, that you inadvertently create them. Or you start to notice the 'negative' things in your life, and you blow them out of proportion so that you feel justified in your belief.

For me, superstition causes negativity, and I'm more focused on the positives and being happy!

Went boating every week from the time i was 3. no thought to bananas given, not a fl thing?

My 6yo boy just came from his friend's house holding a dream catcher. "Mommy mommy!!! Look what I made!! It will capture the bad dreams!!!" I couldn't hold and I said, "Nope. It will only capture dust. A lot of dust."
Now I am thinking that I should hang some bananas on it. Maybe dust doesn't like bananas. I never seen a dusty banana.

No. Mother ( rest in peace ) taught us from an early age to not be superstitious. I'm so glad we were taught that our faith should not come from objects or rituals of man-made origin, but from God.

Jan that is the second time i heard the hat thing. I know the hat thing only as you do not wear in theatres etc. Yours is strange to me? Why would that be? in particular when you compare to Mark's? Where many churches expect at least women to wear hats?

Mark, don't feed the troll. I agree completely with you and with Sandi above as a person of faith with zero superstition. Being a person of faith in a Creator does not make one unintelligent, as many would try to make us feel. Rather, I feel sorry that they do not see the disconnect between themselves and the truth of some rather big cosmic questions that they cannot fully answer with their own myopic theories and worldviews. I only hope that someday they understand our position. Peace.

To tell the truth, I have chuckled through this whole thread! I love people and like to hear what makes them tick. Ritual, belief, superstition...whatever. :)

it can be amazing. before my forced retirement, I worked in an office with 11-15 people for 8 years. Most of us, I would have considered above normal in intelligence. Most were heavy into reading. Almost all had multiple pets. Most had excellent recipes. My hubby thought i would be in heaven, because so rarely are there so many in an office that seem so much like me. And yet, we were all so very different.

I had a black cat (Bombay) for 16 years. Never had any bad luck. She crossed my path hundreds of times a day. Miss her dearly!

The minds of human beings are very small, and the universe is very big. There is more out there than we can ever possibly understand, and even less than we will ever perceive. Much will forever remain unknown to us, for it is beyond our capacity to know.

Definitely. I was raised in an old school family of Irish and Czech culture. Both sides had various superstitions such as 1. It's very bad luck to put shoes on a table. (Czech). 2. If a bird flies into the house, it warns of someone's death (Irish and have found this to be true). 3. Either whistle or say Rabbit when you walk past a cemetary (both). Don't have time to do the complete list, but one could almost be paralyzed with fear if every superstition was subscribed to! Wishing everyone good luck :)

I think superstitions are simply ridiculous! People always gravitate toward the negative. It truly disturbing how far folks will take things like this!

At the risk of repetition, how is remembering a superstition negative behavior? It's just fun. I don't understand the strong revulsion to it either. Sounds defensive, which implies an underlying fear. Oh well.

How about it is part of your culture/ History? Think of reasons behind them, if you can. I know alot of my superstitions come from the deep old south- probably part african/haitian/creole as well as native american. What a glorious mix! Throw in the irish part and you have a real mess! : ))

oh, like i said, not trained in religion, very little knowledge of any but the most obvious saints. Strange thing, both hubbies heavily indoctrinated, #1 -Lutheran, choir boy and whole 9 yards. #2-Southern Baptist and Methodist, still catch him believing Catholics are not Christians, sent himself to church at the ripe age of 6. and yet, i often know more than either of them. tehehe

I think whatever works for each of us-go for it! My 2 favorite numbers are 13 & 31 & look forward to Friday the 13th. I love black cats & have had 3. I step on sidewalk cracks, go under ladders, remove threads from clothes I'm wearing.
I believe what goes around, comes around. May not happen soon enough, but it will. When lighting candles, my hands go around the light sending it out there. I think we all have strong intuition. But along the way it's been suppressed. There are too many things that can't be explained. I remain open.

oh dogmom, did you too have a happy 13th, i love friday the 13th! Those are also my favorite 2 numbers. Are your worst numbers 21 and 12? Hate them, every time i don't use them i miss out, when i do, well the 21st is the day they operated on my cancer. I don't know the one about the candlelight. I do know that it is true about the goes around comes around. If i can just have a wee bit of patience, it always bites that person in the butt. And everyone has always went crazy about my tarot card reading. I don't know because i never ask them the question they want answered, though sometimes i suspect. I just don't know why it works. Though premonition is supposed to be my best talent.

I knock wood. I try not to think of Friday the 13th when it occurs. I try to avoid cracks if I think of it. We get upset when the announcer says "He never misses," because like saying we haven't run into any traffic yet on windy mountain roads both comments beg the opposite to happen. And I definitely believe in what goes around comes around.

I try not to be but then I say 'hmm.. just in case' lol It is logic though NOT to go under any ladder during work going on anyway.

What is so weird anyway, is that when we went on holiday a few years back, weird stuff happen in the house we stayed in and a next door holiday maker left their house for the same reason but we stuck it out,, what was eerie though was when we finally left, and locked the main door, the number ( which we never even knew it had lol) fell off one screw, and hung swinging side to side on the one screw left, it was number 13! :o sent shivers down my spine when that happen! Soooo.. just in case like I said!

Then we have lived in other places which had number 13, and we have seen building with no 13th floor or 13th room .. so depends I think where you go.

I have one superstition which I adhere to religiously. When I got married for the first time my Mother in Law gave me a Kitchen Witch for my Kitchen. She told me That my meals would come out better and there would be no harsh words said in my kitchen that would spoil the food. For 46 years that Kitchen Witch has followed me to every house and Kitchen I've worked in. It works. The one time I removed it because it didn't go with the contemporary styling, we had a grease fire and I had to remodel the whole Kitchen. I never again took it for granted.

you brought a thought to mind Carole. Often i have to convince myself to buy something and i also am heavy into if it is meant to be. So when i do finally buy something, i attend to attach a special meaning to it. Often these things tend to be like good luck talismans. I begin to notice that moving them or not having them there can affect my life in different ways. or it seems like that.

I don't think so but I do have my rituals. And I have lived with a black cat for 14 years and have a very happy life.

Queen, i really was surprised when my mom told me that people still are cruel to black cats do to this superstition!Happy Thanksgiving everyone! And remember we are over 35 million, if we opt out, it will make a difference!

A friend of mine says black cats are unlucky for her, but she is allergic to all cats, so I figure that's why she says it. I've lived with many, many black cats too. Love all cats, even my present calico with attitude!

i had a maine coon all black, lived to be 18. Shazbut was his name. loved that guy.
