IMO I would not have used such large trim on the shiplap and I would just die it into the ceiling without trim.

that was contractors doing - I actually did not know it was going to be there but now I'm kind of stuck - he's is hiding some wiring behind the side trim pieces in order to light up fireplace. Thanks for your input

Sorry, but that shiplap piece looks terrible. I'd make the contractor do it over. It's entirely the wrong style for the fireplace surround.

Now that I take a closer look, the width of those boards is not what I would consider shiplap. Just paneling.

I would remove the shiplap, paint the wall above fireplace to match existing and hang a painting. You can add hurricanes or something else as needed for accessories. It just needs to be lightened up and have a really nice focal point which the painting would accomplish.

HI -- Have the shiplap feature removed ... you do not need anything like that on the wall above the fireplace . It does not go with the style of the mantel surround . Then have a pretty round mirror . Dealing with the vaulted ceilings .. just paint the ceiling and the walls the same color .
