I think your bath could benefit from a larger medicine cabinet that somehow incorporates the lighting and electrical plug all in one. Lighting would be better if it came from the side. Here is an image I think should provide some inspiration.

With a good carpenter, the framing to receive the recessed cabinet could be reconfigured, and the electrical supply moved as required.

I think I might keep your bath painted white and then add some chic black linen like or silk like small pattern or stripe full height drape with a vinyl liner to act as a shower curtain. I would also use the same fabric to create a skirt around the base of the lavatory.

I recently painted a bathroom a bright but not too bright yellow with gray tiles and love it. I like light fixtures that hang down (so the bugs don't get caught in the upward facing shades.) Better lighting, too. Also, what Beverly above said.

OK, so use the look and duplicate it on the cheap. They sell inexpensive medicine cabinets at IKEA and I'm sure there are inexpensive lights that can be mounted to either side of the cabinet. They don't have to be a one piece unit.
