I never see people being happy painting natural materials. if you have the cash or the personal energy, you could try getting it stripped and seeing if it comes out lighter? I would go for lighter brighter elements and more lights in the area.

for example, you have many collections, but they are neither large nor bright. Over the mantle, you have family pics, maybe hang them on a wall in a nice pattern, and then place larger more colorful, but lighter pieces there or a large artwork.

Lets work on lighter and brighter pillows on the furnishings. How about light colored sheers on the windows? Is it time for any new furnishings? A brighter rug, maybe a brass or silver fireplace screen?
